Cool forest associates

The troubling thread about death of red pines in Michigan got me to thinking about some really fine forests I've visited.

These would be Point Beach State Forest near Two Rivers WI, Potowatomie State Park in Door County WI, and Portage Bay State Park in Delta County in Upper Michigan. All three are on the shores of Lake Michigan and therefor tend towards much cooler summer temps than further inland, and feature typical Northern mixed forest species as white pine, hemlock, white cedar (Thuja), paper birch, beech, sugar maple, aspens, yellow birch, balsam fir, and white spruce. What sets them apart for me is the presence of many large red pine in this mix. The big pink trunks really add to the esthetics of this scene!

Now red pine, usually in plantations, is super common in our area, but to see them as native plants in the referenced locations seems special to me.

Just thought I'd share..............+oM
