Christmas Eve at our house...

I want to take a minute to wish all of you a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and to thank you all for giving me a year I will always remember. It has been a year filled with beautiful gardens, knowledge, and the warmth and friendship you don't often find anymore in this cockeyed world of ours. Cottagers are very special people. I've included a couple of pictures, my not so tall and slim Christmas tree and the mantle which ended up with the leftovers. I hope you all have the best Christmas ever....Annette

My husband's parents used to celebrate the English way, or what they thought was English (they're from Hong Kong). A full dinner at 6p on Christmas Eve, putting up the tree, opening presents at midnight, and then eating a full meal AGAIN at 2am in the morning Christmas Day! This really wasn't very enjoyable for me, and since my MIL worked it was pretty stressful for her, too, doing all that stuff! They would make roast leg of lamb (Chinese will eat meat in huge quantities if they can afford it!), shepherd's pie, several Macanese (Portugese recipes adapted from Macau cuisine) dishes, and one little lonely package of Green Giant creamed spinach for 8 people. Eventually over the years, they stopped doing these parties, due to ill health and just getting tired of all the work involved. I was secretly relieved, although my husband STILL misses opening presents on Xmas Eve, LOL! My family of third-generation Asian Americans, celebrates Christmas Day. We never have a set menu, as all of us, including my now-grown-up nephew and niece, are dynamite cooks and love to experiment. Although we do a mostly traditional Thanksgiving, Christmas is always different. Sometimes we do "theme" ethnic cooking; sometimes we do more traditional stuff. This year it's slow-roasted salmon and prime rib, because my nephew is anxious to try cooking his first Big Piece of Red Meat :)) I make a smoked salmon sushi appetizer that the family really likes, so I offered to do the hors d'oeuvres this time. My BIL is vegetarian so he'll do a Greek salad and we'll have a couple of desserts -- probably a tiramisu and a fresh strawberry tart with lemon curd filling. My sister is in charge of the starch this year, could be pretty wild as she approaches cooking as a science experiment! New Year's we celebrate individually. My sister and her family do a buffet drop-in. My husband and I usually make ourselves a nice festive brunch -- blueberry French Toast or Chocolate Pancakes, and then maybe rack of lamb or filet mignon for dinner.

What's she waiting for anyway? In my family and with most other families that I know the place, time, and menu for a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day dinner is planned weeks ahead. That is so that everyone is notified/invited and all cooks know what the game plan is and what they are to provide. Also, so the hosts can set their tables for the number coming or get in extra chairs, ice, china, etc. This meal requires a little more than just throwing some extra burgers or hot dogs on the grill like you would for a casual outdoor cookout in the summer. Even if you don't do "formal" dinners, you still need to be able to plan this meal so you are not rushed and harried. Is she subtly playing a control card with this?

Those kinds of heartwarming stories always make me tear up. I guess because my Christmases have always been touched by those kinds of memories. Thanks....must be cold for your fingers on those # keys.(I know that if the light isn't right, I mix the 9 & 8 & 7 etc.)

The guitar heros went over just fine. They didn't even use it yesterday, they were into the Wii games. The DD playing got, it for the son who was setting on the sofa on the left. DD's DH's parents have the Wii system and they've always loved playing that at Mammaw and Papaw's, so they got themselves (the kids) one for Christmas. LOL Big kids. Well, SIL and his Dad play golf all the time. DD get hot when she sends DH over to his folks to pick up some folding chairs or something, and it takes 2 hours to go 1 mile and back. I love the picture of my Mom and Lily too. Full circle. Leslie

Thank you for all the lovely comments, I have to say this is the first Christmas in a long time I've had everything done without a lot of running around at the last minute, it sure was a nice feeling.

Vikki the tree topper is a small wreath with lights, in the center there are three little candles. It didn't show very well because we took the pictures without the flash. I bought it at a Boxing Day sale a couple of years ago for $2.99 :o). Tried a couple of other tree toppers first but they didn't look right.

We are off to our daughters for "The Turkey Dinner" tonight, for quite a few years now we've had our Christmas dinner on boxing day. This way everybody gets a chance to just hang out and relax on Christmas day. I hope everybody had a very enjoyable Christmas with family and friends....Annette
