I like standard species conifers almost as much as I like the smaller cultivars. If I had twenty acres, maybe I'd have wild stands of Picea omorika, Picea sitchensis, Abies koreana, etc. but I don't have the space.

The large conifers that do reside on my property are a big part of the reason I bought the house. Privacy, lustrous rich green foliage, huge 100+' sun/wind screens and from my upstairs bedroom windows, cones! :)

That 'Phlox' looks like Iberis sempervirens to me. AKA Candytuft.

I am excited to have cones on Pinus pungens, P. virginiana and P. patula for the first time this year. I will see if I can get some pics.

What is the one on the 3rd pic posted by the OP? I love that bright nerw growth with the reddish cones

Alexa, the cones in the third pick are purple. The small golden balls you see are actually new buds getting ready to push. The plant is Picea mariana 'Aureovariagata', and it's a doosey. Blue green foliage becomes bright, wonderful golden yellow on the tops of the needles wherever sun exposure sustains for any consistent length of time.

The cones of Araucaria angustifolia are not colorful like Abies or Piceas, but I think they are striking.
Hope you donÂt mind me showing them off.

Now, if I can only find a pollinator; these cones have a lot of growing to do.

Great to see cones on A. angustifolia! Where is the tree located? Mine are still too young for cones yet..maybe someday....

The tree is located in my backyard, which is in North Coastal San Diego. I grew the tree from seed planted in the winter of 97. You are lucky to have one; not many of these guys around.

Sorry, not sure where to get one. There are specimens in various gardens in Europe where you could perhaps obtain scions, or find someone going on a collecting trip to China.

Nice cone Keith. That's my favorite fir species. (I've got about 30 seedlings) potted up that I don't know yet
what the cone color will be, however... any one of those seedlings are just as good, or nearly as good, as any
cultivar. You just can't go wrong with Korean fir, am I right or am I right?

Here is my 1 ft high Pinus mugo 'Short Needle' (Iseli) with very small cones. Sorry my camera has no zoom. My 6 yr old grandson loves to twang the little white pollen cones and see the white pollen forming a cloud.
