Another fine walk amongst the Aloes, lzddr - those, along with the sunshine that we had for several hours and above-freezing temps, made my day. I grew many of those but not to the maturity/flowering stage - it's an impressive letter grouping. Wasn't Aloe globuligemma the one that grows in soil that has radioactive metals beneath it?

OT...Cactusmcharris, I drove through Kamloops a few years ago with my family....we were in Baniff and drove to see relatives in Cannum Lake BC...near 100 mile house...I remember Kamloops..you are in "God's Country" simply beautiful!!!

Thanks, Lzrddr...now I have to start collecting aloes? I never knew there were so many interesting varieties! I recently discovered this with agaves....now aloes...time to make some room!

Could you offer any advice as to which of the following would be the easiest in culture? Especially in terms of growing outdoors in late spring to summer, back indoors in early fall:

Aloe dichotoma
Aloe marlothii
Aloe peglarae
others?

I especially like the bluer varieties with lots of thorny tubercles... staying smaller in pots would be an advantage, too.

I really have no experience juggling with outdoor/indoor thing, so I don't know which would be easiest for you.. .blue aloes, in general, tend to be fussier about high humidity, so you might struggle with all of them, especially Aloe dichotoma... whether that is indeed the case, I don't know... only a guess. Aloe peglarae, of the three you mentioned, would obviously be less difficult to move about as it stays small.. the other two more likely to become enormous or problematic with time. Aloe plicatilis has a somewhat high tolerance for humitidy, has a nice blue color (see it on the next walk in garden, #3). I know several people out east who have beautiful large bonsais of that one. Aloe vaombe is exceptionally tolerant of high humidity (lots of them growing in Busch Gardens in Tampa, outdoors). Not blue, though. Aloe maculata is a super easy plant and the variegateds are common now, if you like that sort of thing.

I very much appreciate the advice...I will look into the additional ones you mention.

Some great photos of a really interesting collection of Aloes, many that one doesn't commonly see up here in the San Francisco Bay Area, where it is easier to rot out some of them with too much rain in winter. I'd be interested to hear where you source some of your plants, as you have a very diverse collection. It looks to me as if you may be a regular visitor to the annual Huntington Botanic Garden sales...

On another note, Tom in Mass. certainly grows a fine looking Aloe plicatilis, better looking than some of this I have growing in the backyard with not enough full sun. I would think the main problem with growing Aloes indoors in winter is giving them enough bright light and rotating them if the light only comes from one side. Plus they are probably much more prone to getting attacked by mealybugs when brought indoors and packed together in winter.

I have more problems growing the species from winter dry parts of South Africa, because they stay too wet here in a San Francisco/Berkeley winter, and I lose them to rot or to too much cold, and not enough full sun in my winter shaded back garden.

Cool Aloe Tom. Like you and Keith I have one coming along. One thing that shocked me this summer- I was watering it and just using my thumb over the open hose I hit the side of the potted Plicatilis trunk and-it gouged the bark off!..I don't know why-I never noticed that before happening. Maybe when they are water stressed? Just a sort of warning to others.
