Unfortunately most of the roses in our Community Garden are past peak & we are supposed to have a walk through tomorrow of a rose Society & gathering of Rosarians...ah well!

Hi Zeffy - I'm glad you took the time to catch us up on your life, I've been wondering. In fact I have a Thanksgiving card in front of me on my desk with your name on it and cannot find your street address! So now you know how cluttered my office is, because I know it's here somewhere, just not in my email address book under residence, or my regular address book either. I'm so happy you are feeling better - it doesn't sound perfect but better is good if it's letting you enjoy some things again. And I love the idea of two turkeys to cut down on your work Thanksgiving Day (read your other post on the day-before gravy). I'm the gravy maker in our family and will cook that at my Sis's house; last year my brother put the turkey in a roaster in his Traeger grill (uses wood pellets) at Christmas and the bird was great but I had a heck of a time with the gravy, the drippings had a distinct smokey taste that I didn't like and I couldn't find anything to add to diminish the smoke flavor. Thought I might roast some hind quarters or something ahead of time and freeze drippings to take this Christmas on the chance he does that again :) Maybe I'll even just roast a small bird for leftovers and use the juices from that. I think Robyn can count on her children seeing the divorce differently when given some time to mature and get used to the change. It would be nice if it was sooner, but if she's patient I'm convinced they'll come around. When my sister and her husband divorced, to her credit she never once said anything critical about him to her kids and they blamed her for his unhappiness and their own. Once grown, they came to understand on their own and to trust her completely while with their dad, they realized (finally) they were always trying to please him enough to 'deserve' his love. In fact, in court (huge battle over custody) the judge even said HE trusted her enough to put the kids ahead of her own feelings and make sure they had quality time with their dad, he didn't believe the same to be true of her ex, told him that, and she was given full custody. Celeste, I hope you have a lovely holiday too - what a difference a year makes! I think you have an angel on your shoulder watching the loving care you give your mother - that mother who looks so content in the pictures you've shared.

Is Brooklyn a convenient location for you? (Sorry, my American geography is not so great..). If it is, the Cranford Rose Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens might be what you're looking for. They have a wonderful collection which seems to include a high proportion of Antiques and Species/near Species. Sadly, I only know this Garden through photos and descriptions. A lady from there posts here sometimes - is it monarda?? There were some terrific pics on a thread titled 'Spring walk around (very long)' posted by labrea last june, that should whet your appetite! LOL Marcia, you are a card for sure. And I DO have one hellova Gulf Frit population this year. They know I am here, I guess. Tonight, after setting on my stoop for a bit, I gotta tell ya, that is my fav sitting spot these days. When I was a kid it was a big deal Friday and Saturday nights to hurry up with dinner dishes and join our folks sitting on the stoop. Sometimes they would get talking with neighbors. We were tickled to be outside after dark watching lightening bugs and see the stars coming out and the moon rising. Mom and Dad would forget the time passing conversing with neighbors that we sometimes got to stay up to 9 o'clock! That was a BIG deal for us. But sitting on the stoop, hugging my dad's leg and listening to the adults was certainly a time I cherished. Well, I digressed a bit. While on the stoop tonight I had ever more Gulf Frits put into the relocation program. They keep showing up on my smaller plants that I want to grow, not be defoliated. Tonights last bus to the big Passie farm. By the way, Dennis is wondering if moving them, touching them, is making them know me. I have had more gulf frit adults lately that will cling to my shirt, perch on my arm, it's a butterfly petting zoo here.

I had to laugh about the lawn mowing thing. I am the eldest of 3 girls. I had never, ever even dreamed of mowing the lawn or shoveling snow. The latter remains unexperienced. Mow!? Shovel!? "I don't think so," she replied disdainfully. However, never say never. When we moved out here, DH was still working 7 days a week, sometimes 16 hours a day. Waiting for him to mow was just plain (crazy) rude. We didn't have the $$ to pay someone for 3 hours' worth of mowing, so..... He once said that he had to call my mom with the weirdest thing he'd ever heard me say: "I'm going to mow the lawn, then I'm going to Wal-Mart." O. M. G. But my lawn's mowed, I have my seasonal bummy poision ivy, and it looks purty. My lawn, not my bummy. (You forget that ladies also don't spit, pick their noses [or bottoms] or teeth, have gas, burp, use the word "cheap" [unless in relation to another's look or behavior], swear, wear curlers in public, and many other elements of deportment. I guess admitting to mowing the lawn is something my mom has gotten over. Or, being a lady, is just chosing to ignore it. Out of sight...)

Thanks so much, Joe. We have let our BBG membership lapse after over 30 years, as it got more and more commercial and full of concrete construction. Glad to see the rose garden is still hanging in there.

(I have Kakwa now after seeing it there. Love it. Wilmottae is stupendous).

Yes it's dames Rocket Sarah the Rosarian for the Cranford Rose Garden has planted many companions with the roses so it's less like a rose museum.
This combination with Foetida Persiana is wnderful

Thank you Joe for this stupendous tour. I'v not been to either garden since moving to WA some 15 years ago. I believe I'm going to have to go again soon. I also miss the Edna Haupt Conservatory during the Christmas holiday season. Did I spell any of it right?

ENID (lol) there is a wonderful exhibition at Enid Haupt right now! Called Groundbreakers celebrating Early 20th Century American Gardens & the Women that designed them.

Have you seen any rose trees there? For some reason I don't see a lot of rose trees in the US rose gardens (public), may be it's part of the budget cut.....they cost more for sure.

Thanks, Joe, for these stunning photos. I made my annual visit to the Cranford Garden last week. I had a great time there as always, but as in the past wish they would display the rose name tags a little better. They grow most if not all of their OGRs along the fences. Lots of these roses I would love to learn their names, but could not find the tags.

Lovely, lovely photos. Now I will have to go the one in the Bronx this year as well...
