Here's a pic taken at night with covers on fixtures (they look like clouds). Notice the mirror above window? the big window is 6 ft wide & the horizontal lites are half the width of vertical lite. It reflects lite down to table below. And, check out that ceiling fan..it has a heater in it! It runs on remote..has a fan setting & heat. On heat, it blows upwards & on 'fan' setting it blows down. It has a thermostat in it & heater kicks in when temps fall & slow down when temps go up. IT'S TOO COOL!!!! From Reiker, just over $300. Weighs 40 lbs (I put it in myself LOL)

But I have a question. From your experience, because the lights are located so high are they adequate enough to give enough lights for your plants to grow?

Wow great job. A room all for the plants, cool. I have the same question as Benny. I thought that flourescents should be very close to the plants. But with all those windows they'll definitely be getting all available sunlight.

I heard the lights should be close too, but it seems to be working. Pic doesn't do justice but those lights are very brite! The window looks so small in pic but the big one is 6 ft wide & 5' high, & then the 2 on either side. Since plants are in there (3 weeks now), meyer lem. & budhha hand started blooms! And, my 2 yellowing lem. guava's have greened up.
Benny, thanks. When I look up at the lights, it blinds me. Then when I go in kitchen I can't see! And don't forget that the plants are already in a sunny room getting south sun, so it's not like they are in basement.In Dec. it'll be dark by 4:15 so lites will be on then till 8 or so.
Chops, I like that room so much (it's 16x18'), I put a tv in there & a recliner. BF helped me put 2 speakers on wall LMAO. In summer (plants are outside),we have dinner in there & watch tv, so I use it for me too. :)

This is off topic but I'll ask anyway. For so long now, I've been wanting to put speakers (sorround sound) (flush-mounted) on the wall in my living room but from all the stores I went to with their demo speakers on their store, I can not find the ones that I like. Been to Circuit City, Boise exclusive store, Staples, Best Buy, you name it but what kind of speakers did you install? Are you happy with the sound? Brand name? Please.

Benny, don't think you have to apologize. I have 2 speakers on wall from an old stereo--15 inches high x 8 wide panasonic. You can use any speakers. I junked an old car & I took 2 extra speakers out of it. they are much smaller. I bet you know someone who has xtra speakers to sell for cheap. Any speaker will work. I traded my truck last yr --guy I bought it from had 2 extra speakers behind seats. I have them LOL They are 5"x5" & I could add them in rm too.
Toni, I have 2 skylites in there & it was easier to put them in with new construction. To add them to already built room is much harder w/ more carpentry. I have 3 sola tubes in other rooms that bring a lot of lite in & easier to install.

Benny, a reason why you are not off topic... I can put music on in there to help plants grow better! Recently on news there is a guy in Italy who has speakers all over his vineyard. He plays Mozart, Beethoven etc & claims that the grapes are much bigger & better than an area where he has no speakers LOL. I should put some of that music on in there & get HUGE fruits huh?

Benny - I too apologize for my off topic reply. I'll try to segue it into a citrus discussion: Flat wall-mounted speakers in an interior room CONTAINING CITRUS TREES (LOL) are best purchased through Bose. Have you considered in-wall speakers? You'd need to use your reciprocal saw and do a little wiring, but talk about a space saver!

Yes, that's exactly what I want in-wall speakers! And I went to Bose exclusive store and what they have did not appeal to me. Or maybe I am just getting hard of hearing LOL. They just have this 10" round or 12" rectangular for flush mounting and the sound is so yakky.
I heard this sourround sound in Circuit city with 800 watts output 6 speakers front and back and large subwoofers. And I was watching this starwars movie. The sound was so realistic so that it almost lift me off my buns.That's the kind I want but in-wall.
Perhaps maybe I will just have to improvish. Huh!

They've been talking about plants effect to music for years..in a good way..
Many ppl swear their plants do best when they play, classical music.
Supposedly, rock is bad, but I disagree..I think plants like 'all' music..lol..have you ever sang to a plant? LOL..I do this while working with them..

Benny LOL, my neighbors would think I'm nuts too if I put speakers outside by 'citrus' & played Beethoven. I'm gonna play some rock & roll for the citrus that didn't bloom yet- that'll wake 'em up!
Toni, it's not "us guys"--BF doesn't live here. He helped me (along w/ a jack) get the drywall on ceiling, but I did the walls & all the taping. That was the easy part of all the work building the whole thing LOL.
No, I don't talk or sing to my citrus (or plants). Yes, I heard of ppl doing that. But, the guy in Italy playing classical in a vineyard is a new one. Esp since he proved the ones with speakers around grew bigger & better grapes.
Benny, BF has small speakers recessed in his L. rm walls & we watched nascar ---I SWORE the cars were behind the sofa going around room! It lifted me 'off my buns' :).

H0! Ho! Patty, that's the kind I want! Now please tell me what brand and what store did your BF bought them please! I've been looking for one now for more than a year.

I'll try to find out Benny. He bought the house 6-7 yrs ago & they came w/ it, in the walls. You got me going now on speakers. I have 2 other sets besides what's on the wall. I will hook up wiring to them & try them out & tell you which I think is best. I bet the smaller ones are the best. One set (on wall) is panasonic, 2 smaller (in size) are pioneer & the 5" x5" (half size of pioneer) is Clarion. The last two are both 3 way, 20 impedance & 60 watt and they sounded great in my old cars. You don't have to spend big bucks for good speakers these days. Will be busy tomorrow but you got me going on trying out these speakers & I'll let you know! I'll send you pics too if you want ( your email addy).

Wow! I know I came to the right place although this is citrus forum. Thanks guys so very mucho.
The reason behind my inquiry is because sometimes all of our friends have a singalong in my living room and I want to impress them with the sound. My wife have a nice Kareoki (sp) set up. It's just for fun to see your score after you sang. But count me out. You may want to get out of the house once I started singing. Perhaps my citrus also. And I am thinking to get a good HDTV with it.

Benny - When I think of sing-along, I think of the great piano bars like Ivory Kats (Austin) and Jellyrolls (Atlanta/Pittsburgh/Orlando). They do a lot of Elton John/Van Morrison/Billy Joel. Can I assume that your (very nice) collection of citrus trees has been serenaded with these pop sounds?

Those singers you mentioned are really great singers and sang really good songs but I have my own favorites like Matt monroe, Tony Bennet, Elvis, Nat King Cole, Kenny Rogers... to name a few.

Laaz, I saw your link to 'Citrus speakers' and laughed so hard I was crying!..almost peed my pants. And you too AAE...you guys are so funny.
Benny, I tried those speakers out today and to me they sound great, but I think you are looking for something more powerful. To me, four of these little speakers would be fine in my CITRUS room. I'll send you pics of them and will find out what BF has in his walls.
Now, I will experiment on music in there during the day & see what happens!!! Nice relaxing stuff..& if they don't produce, then it'll be loud heavy metal crap to shock 'em hee hee.

Patty - I seriously think that music can affect the plants, because it affects the people who are caring for the plants. This is why my XM stays on "Chrome" (disco) or "Hank's Place." The lounge music is good too, as long as Tom Jones is in the mix.
