Set up my sunroom yesterday. It's a poly covered porch that provides most of my homes heat in winter. It can get very warm, maybe too warm to ripen figs but they do like heat. I know they won't ripen in the greenhouse because it will soon be on chill cycle. So figured I've little to lose by giving this a try.

What's the odds they make good fruit? They'll be moved inside the house at night because it freezes on the porch and the warmer night will really speed ripening. Our shortest day will provide at least 9 hrs of light.

I don't see why they wouldn't.

I actually picked some today that were quite good flavor and sweetness wise, which surprised me since its been overall wet and coolish the past few months. We had a hard freeze the other night, but up by the building only the outer foliage was nipped a bit by the frost.

I thought these would be tasteless and perhaps spongy and dry, but they were good.

So, you never know with a fig.

Beautiful! I would love to grow figs but I have no 'sun/garden' room. Those are beautiful. Will they remain green or turn brown, what variety? Thanks Mrs. G

Thanks everyone! claudosu, I water it using reverse osmosis water, in a plastic watering can with a thin, long spout. I gently pour the water down the inside of the glass. I found the bowl (which is 12" wide at its widest point) in a yard sale and it has two tiny holes pinged into the glass near the bottom, as if it were shot with a BB gun. When I bought it for $2, it was filled with wine corks, and a friend of mine collects wine corks because she is a crafts teacher for kids with Downes Syndrone. So I gave her the corks, and kept the bowl. :) Anyway, it's filled about 1/4 of the way with Potting Soil. Also, there is a 1" layer of used aquarium gravel at the bottom. Any extra water leaks out through the little BB holes. I don't use much fertilizer, only 1/4 strength about once a month. It gets very bright light all day, with a little full sun in the early morning and late afternoon. Let me see if I can find a pic when I first planted it, you'll laugh... I used moss from the shady parts in my yard...and about 2 years ago a little fern sprouted in there too.

Thanks, everyone! The blue was okay but it was my experiment in using a color I'm not usually drawn to, and it never really "worked" for me. (Funny, I am having two rooms painted and both are/were blue.) The Mesquite was a last-minute choice and I'm really happy with it. Today I am off to Home Goods, hoping to find a fun bulletin board for over the desk. I was going to DIY but... feeling lazy. Also going to a consignment shop hoping to find a bookcase for that one blank wall. I have a low bookcase that coordinated with the desk, but I need more storage so looking for something taller. Fingers crossed...

We live in a 1920s house and we have two. One is upstairs, connected to the master and only has two walls of windows and we were told was a "sleeping porch" originally. Eight years ago we added a room onto the back of the house, a room with sliding doors instead of windows on three of the walls. It looks like a porch that has been enclosed, but it is all new build. The room upstairs is our extra TV room -- two comfortable leather chairs and a TV and the wall that isn't windows is a wall of books. The downstairs room we use for a breakfast room (we have no eat in kitchen). It has one brick wall (the outside of the house) and a brick floor. It's where the big plants winter and where we eat most of our meals. What I would love is a conservatory with a roof of glass as well and I could probably put one on the south side of the house if I win the lottery -- LOL! Martha

Friedrich or Frigidaire through the wall ac/heater for Sunroom.

Replacing a current 8,000 btu Frigidaire AC unit in a sunroom that is insulated in only walls and floor. Previous owners did not put in an adequate unit to cool/heat the space. Sunroom is 15 x 25 long (irregular shape) with 11.5 foot ceilings and 80% Pella thermal double pane windows. The room gets late sun exposure (almost sauna like), and does have existing baseboard heat which is adequate for colder months, so I'm not really sure I need a "double duty" unit. For AC purposes I probably only need 14,000 BTU's but those are hard to find. Has anyone experience with either of these manufacturers and the performance of the units? I am attaching a pic of my sunroom. My concerns: (1) Noise level of units (I have heard the Friedrich is much quieter. My current unit sounds like a train on high speed); (2) aesthetics with in-wall application. I need to have a unit that will be as flush as possible with the wall. The old unit looks like it was just "jammed" in the space and sticks out more than 5 inches from the wall! I am considering the following "through the wall units" -- appreciate any suggestions. I already have an existing 220 line and/or a 115 volt line in place. Thanks so much! The Paradiso is a large green fig. Vista is a medium size dark fig. I like the taste of both.

Yesterday the sunroom hit low 90s with an outside high temperature of 68F. We are supposed to be mostly highs of 70s the next 10 days. So today I added a shade cloth to the south side of the sunroom, pic below.

When it gets colder I'll remove the shade cloth and add some reflective material on the ground to the south side. This will keep the sunroom in the 90s and warm the house to upper 70s to low 80s with an outside high of 60F.

My total cost for putting up the poly, framing, and reflective material is probably $300-400. I save way more than that in heating costs very year. Plus I have a cozy 90s environment for figs.
