Damp-off of very young seedlings has never been that much of a problem for me, but I think the reason for that may be how I germinate them to begin with. It's a cue I took from my mother, which is basically to put the seeds in the same pot (around the edges of the pot) with an adult plant then water the adult plant the way I normally would. It means I don't use bottom heat and whatnot, so things sprout when it naturally becomes warm enough for them, but pretty much I don't worry as much about damp-off because there are older roots using the same water in the same pot. It's when I take the babies out that I experience problems. As I mentioned, I actually put some young Calamondins back with their Rangpur Lime host plant to recover after this winter. The other thing I practice quite a lot is the theory that it's not dead until it's dead and even if I'm sure its dead, it's worth a shot. You wouldn't believe the number of citrus seedlings and cutting grown figs I had come back to life after the moving issue the spring before last. I actually use the much maligned self watering pots, but not as self watering pots. The designers would say I'm using them totally backwards. I'll go down my line of trees and tip them to dump the water if I notice water actually standing in any of the reservoirs. (I can't imagine using them to "self water" because what that really does is create a high water table for root rot.) If you've ever taken a moment to look at one of those things empty, the bottom of the pot that sits inside the reservoir is like a pasta strainer. So long as the reservoir is always empty, drainage isn't a problem.

poncirusguy, In regards to your question about the kumquats, My favorite is meiwa then close second fukishu then nippon. One of my favorite things abut them is the summer flowering. Meiwa is simply the best tasting. They can be very sweet and somewhat tart at the same time, a very nice combination they also have a nice texture. The downside is of course they have a few seeds and sometimes they can have a bit of a bitter aftertaste from the oils in the rind. letting them hang into January or later seems to almost eliminate this. Fukishu is very good tasting. Sweet and juicy but not as sweet and a little more sour then meiwa. Its large which is nice but has (its hard to identify exactly) but maybe a slightly musky aroma. seedy. The growth characteristics of the tree are great for containers, short bushy and productive. Nippon is not as good for fresh eating but I do eat them out of hand. Nippon seems to be more of an ornamental or can be used to make awesome marmalade. Large fruit that are sour with some sweetness and can have a bitter aftertaste. They get sweeter but they have to hang on the tree for a while, into March or later - they will never get as sweet as meiwa or fukishu. They are seedy. People who prefer mostly sour with some sweetness may like nippon as much or more then Meiwa, My nippon is one of the most visually appealing trees I have, loaded but still somewhat upright with dark orange almost red fruit and long broad dark green leaves is simply strikingly beautiful in the winter, ill send you a picture later this season.

Now that I have learned to grow citrus with no problems I have 3 Poncirus trifoliata of grafting size and 4 sweetlee tangerine trees of vigor that will be graft-able next spring. That's 7 root-stocks that I can graft my twigs from the grafted tree I can purchase. My purchased tree will grow faster by waiting a year and will out grow anything I bought a year earlier. My decision is to not buy a grafted tree and to grow what I have. If it fruits, great If they don't. Well we'll see My from seed Nagami kumquat for grafting to poncirus trifoliata Seed grown Meiwa kumquat tree. The tree fruit I am interested in. To be grafted on to the poncirus trifoliata moots through the Nagami inter-stock. May also go directly to my sweetlee tangerine tree root-stock, Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #1 Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #2 Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #3 Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #4 Seed grown poncirus trifoliata to be grafted on Is posted above . Its in a blue 55 gallon half drum. This completes what I have done and what I have. I get NONE, except for lemons on my meyer for my fish dinners and a few Oro grapefruit which I give to my boss for letting me bring to work. lol. Literally, there is not a one that deserves any of my fruit since NO ONE helps me care for them, nor are interested in my trees..I don't even eat citrus. I grow them for fragrance. I am getting a new tree, a Kishu which I can eat and I am hoping I get lots of of that. As for the other 30 or so trees, I pluck every fruit off before they can even grow, except for my lemon meyer which I use on my fish, saying about 4 pounds and my Oro, about 6 lbs..

Hi Steve...

You keep saying that 2 out of three trees die that you buy that are graftings, right? Have you tried to figure out why they die?
I think now that you have been a forum member for quite some time that you would not loose a one, but then you would probably have to use better mixes..

Have you ever thought of trying rooted cuttings instead of grafts?
This might be your cup of tee if you find that buying grafts are too expensive..

Just a few ideas...But if you insist of growing from seed, then my hats off to you.
Most people I know don't have the time or patience to wait for years for their trees with potted trees up north to produce from seeds, and that is why many are wiling to pay the price the way they do.
I think many that can grow in-ground don't want to take the chance of some disease such as phytophtora spp. killing their seedlings so therefor turn to better root stock.
As for me, I don't have the room or time to wait for seedlings to flower when I can get them to do so as quick as looking at them in the store.

if price is not an option, I can understand why a few people grow from seed, but then too I think many in-ground citrus growers use grafted for many reasons too.

I think John uses grafted for many reasons..

I think that even those that have the option to plant in the ground still have to wait years for seedlings to produce, let alone grow in pots up here in the north...

I have already pulled off limes, lemons, oranges and kumquats off trees no bigger than a foot high..Now for me, that is what I call exciting and fresh produce!

I'm with john on this.

I've been posting here for years and the answer is No. No one has posted about getting fruit from a seed grown kumquat. Steve, you have been here long enough to know that answer and why you continue to ask it is beyond me.

I have been enjoying fruit from my grafted trees for months now.
