Hi guys, I got my babies today...here they are!

1. Genus of 1! Lapidaria margarethae

2. I am so excited! Frithia pulchra

3. Orbea melanantha

4. Duvalia corderoyi

5. Aloe 'quicksilver' - thought I had to get one of these!

6. Aloe nubigena - a grass aloe that grows in the misty mountain slopes of a place called "Graskop"

7. An 2 Aloe congolensis or tenuifolia, second is a hybrid, but loved the stripes.

Beachplants..Nice haul!

All are nice, but my favorite is A. quick-silver.

Your Duvalia looks like a turtle. lol.

Is your A. nubi cared for like other Aloes?

Toni, thanks! Aloe nubigena likes mistings more that others and its much more fleshy, lily-like, so I am carefull with too much hot sun.

Nat, I do indeed grow Pope John Paul II and a few other hybrid teas. All hybrid teas in our climate will die back to only a few inches (or to the mulch line if you mound the base with soil or mulch). I used to grow more hybrid teas but have gotten tired of the winter dieback so I only kept a few, and PJP is one that I just had to keep because of the fragrance and sheer beauty of those pristine white blooms. Even though it gets pruned back to only a few inches tall in the spring, it rallys and will come back to bloom and be lovely all summer. My advice is to mound up some soil around the base of it to about a foot in the late fall. Next spring you will find that the top of it will be all brown and dead, but once you remove the soil from around it in the spring you should find some green, live cane. Prune it back to that green cane and it will sprout new growth that will produce flowers later. Most of my roses, with the exception of the old once-bloomers and rugosas (and a few Canadian-bred roses) will have quite a bit of dieback, but so long as there is some green cane, no matter how little, your rose will come back. Make sure you don't remove the winter protection until the ground and temps warm up fairly consistently (usually late April to early May here). Ownroot roses will come back even if the plant appears brown to the ground, because they come back from their roots. But I grow mostly grafted here because ownroots struggle in our climate, and I haven't lost a rose to winter yet. I've learned to accept the fact that in zone 4, most roses have to be pruned back fairly drastically in the spring. But no one would think by looking at them all in bloom in June that they ever had a 'haircut'....they grow rapidly and the pruning really stimulates blooming. Take care, Celeste

oh Larry....YEA on the baby melons!!!! I'll live vicariously thru you. I probably won't get any this year since I haven't EVEN been able to plant. But I want to offer some encouragement on the sweet taters. We've had this happen 2 different years...the deer acted like electric hedge-trimmers on the green leaves....and it didn't hurt the harvest one-little bit! Keep watering...and please, remember to turn on the fence! LOL! The last year we had this happen we got over 80 lbs of sweet taters at harvest, which was the BEST we've EVER had. Paula

We adopted a husky while I was pregnant. We had her for 5 months before DS was born, during which time she grew very attached to me. We also have a cat (well, at 25 lbs, he may be a second dog) who can be a little mean. Luckily, so far everything has worked out. We were a bit concerned because she had been abused, but she is absolutely wonderful with him. We did the things you've mentioned -- sent a blanket home, had DH carry DS into the house, etc. She was curious about him the first day home, but she was PISSED at me for having left her for 2 days. Luckily she didn't do anything but give me the cold shoulder for a while. DS is now 19 months old, and our dog is still wonderful with him. She's a little protective, actually -- she'll get between the stroller and someone who approaches us on the street; she gets upset if he cries, or she'll look at me like if it were her kid, she'd get to that crib faster than me! Food may be another big issue, especially if your dog is used to table scraps. Try putting your hand in/around the bowl when the dog's eating to see how she responds. If she's the least bit snappy, you may have to feed her when the baby naps, especially after baby is mobile. One of DS's favorite haunts when he started to crawl was the dog bowls -- to splash or check out the food (we try to empty the dish if she doesn't finish b/c the food can be a choking hazard in addition to being downright gross). And our DS also loves to feed the dog from his chair, so if that's something that's going to annoy you, make sure you don't let the dog or the baby develop that habit after you start on solid foods. For us, the problem began with cheerios at about 8 or 9 months. I've tried to make it a point to integrate the dog and the baby. We have a jogging stroller, and most days I'll take both of them on hour long walks. I think it helps the dog to just see DS as an addition to her life, rather than competition. We practice petting gently. When DS was old enough to sit up & reach for the animals, we would take his hand, help him pet them, and say gentle. Now if he gets a little rough, all we have to do is tell him to be gentle. That's pretty much all I can think of. We've got great pictures of DS crawling all over the animals and giving them hugs. Congrats.

Beachplants, what beautiful plants you got. My favorite is the Frithia. Adorable!

What are you using for soil? Also, why do you have large stones in the pots? Is if for visual appeal or is there some beneficial reason you have them in all your planted pots.

Multiple reasons, sometimes for a little support, sometimes visual, or in the case with Lapidaria, the quartz are found with them in nature. We do not have the great stuff you guys have so most of mine is in riversand and sifted potting soil or similar. Seems to work fine for me in any case.

Oh my gosh! What exotic and captivating plants you collect! The fact that you actually know their names, their culture, and where they orignated leaves me in awe of your dedication to cacti and succulents. Thank you for sharing them with us. Even though I may never personally own a plant as exotic as these, seeing them and learning about them opens my eyes to the broad beauty of the cacti and succulent world. I can hardly wait for you to get your next batch of babies! Hopefully, we won't have to wait nine months.

Thanks Penny, You know the interesting part is that I would guess you could get most of them far easier than I can. We rarely even have cacti&succulent shows. For me its a choice of seeds or knowing someone...

I have been transplanting my earlier seedlings, mainly cheiridopsis, gibbaeum, argyroderma and a few others..so at some stage I will post a few. The tough times begin now, because we will be away for a bit during Dec and that is usually "loss" time, having to ask someone to look after them. Oh, well, gives me something to do in 2012! LOL!

Really cool looking plants, all.
May I ask where you got the Aloes; quick siler and the Aloe congolensis or tenuifolias? Also really like the in Genus of 1! Lapidaria margarethae. Maybe these are out of my leauge, I sure can like them though.

Micki, got these from a local South African guy - but the A. congolensis is pretty common as well as the small Aloe hybrids, not sure about Lapidaria. Try "Lowes" and local succulent organisation (clubs) & there is a few good suppliers for postal orders in US. Maybe someone here can give a few options.

Beach, I mist tropicls religiously, but never succulents. I didn't know Aloes liked/needed misting. Do you spray all your Aloes or the one? Toni

Toni, no, just this one, due to its origin. You know when you look at a mountain and you see the low-level clouds around it or mist, that's where this one grows in its natural environment.

how unfair you live in a the perfect climate where all these types of plants grow normally anyway. While all the rest of us struggle with heating, cooling and watering schemes... all you have to do is plant and you're done. So not fair. I really am tempted to one day up and move and become your neighbor.
