First up these are the two stands of ancient and famous Wellingtonias they have there. (I'm not sure thats the current accepted name for the genus)

It isn't. The genus is Sequoiadendron. The history for the use of the name "Wellingtonia" for sequoias is kind of funny. For such an incredible tree, Americans seemed to pay very little attention to them in their early days; the earliest reports of discovery were pretty much ignored. I suppose many people just assumed the trees were exaggerated or outright fabrications. The British, on the other hand, took an immediate interest; within years of the discovery, sizable numbers of them were being planted in Britain. British horticulturist John Lindley gave the species the name Wellingtonia gigantea, named after Duke Wellington... but didn't realize that someone had already given that genus name to a plant in the family Sabiaceae, thus rendering it an invalid name. There were a bunch of other false starts in naming the species (one person even tried to name it after George Washington, Washingtonia californica, not realizing that Washingtonia is a genus of palms); it wasn't until 1939 that it settled into Sequoiadendron giganeum, which is the official name.

Beautiful trees there, by the way. I understand that they really take well to the British climate.

Ah, Dawn Redwood! Yea magnificent trees but multi-stemmed which seems odd! All the redwoods I've seen are straight as a die single stemmed behemoths.

The "mugo" is another Sierra redwood (Sequoiadendron). The "fir" is a Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara). The first pine looks like an Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus). The last looks to have foliage like Austrian pine (P. nigra) but no blackish sections of bark can be seen in this view.

A closer shot would be more useful.

No. Giant Sequoia -- Sequoiadendron giantea. That's what they call "Wellingtonia" in your parts (but that's not actually the genus name; that was the case of one of your horticulturists not taking the time to check to see if a genus name already existed before he tried to name the tree.). Dawn redwoods are, as bboy points out, in a different genus -- Metasequoia. So if it's not a Giant Sequoia, then it's not a "Wellingtonia", either.

It's probably not multi-stemmed; it's probably several trees planted too close together. I don't know if these are the same trees your photos are of, but at least in the picture here from South Park, it looks pretty clear to me that it's multiple trees planted close together.

Also, doing a bit more digging, I found this:

They are situated in an old Victorian park called 'South Park', in Darlington, which is currently going through a massive regeneration project and where sadly hundreds of seemingly healthy trees were cut down, due to the completly overgrown state of the park.

A It is normally the Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) rather than the Giant Redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum / Giant Sequoia / Wellingtonia) that sprout from the base of an existing tree but we have seen two other examples, one at Cambridge University Botanical Gardens and the other, a magnificent example, at Shalstone. Another clue to the type of tree may be to look at The North East web site which shows a couple of pictures that are definitely Giant Redwoods judging by the shape. You may recognise the location by the lake. However, if you can get close enough, the way to tell for certain is to examine the foliage and compare it to our examples on the Redwood Types page.

Ah, here we go! The history of the planting of the sequoias at South Park:

Of course, from small acorns large oak trees do grow. Today, 141 years almost to the day later, the sequoia have grown into huge trees with grand, sweeping boughs. They are probably the pride of the park.

At 141 years old, they are infants. In 2002 a sequoia was stump-counted as 3,266 years old. At 20 metres tall, they are dwarfs. The tallest sequoia in the UK is 45 metres high, at Leod Castle, to the north of Inverness.

Oh, and just so you know: as the article points out, the name "Wellingtonia" is often seen as a form of botanical colonialism (attempting to name an exceptional US tree after a British war hero who never saw one and probably never gave much thought to trees in general). So usage of the term is ill-advised.

Hmm someone else in my town with an interest in trees! would love to find out who! I love trees but feel I'm the only one round here that feels the same way!

Well the tree in your link is also one of the trees mentioned here Northern Echo,Two tall trees, three men and a wedding
so would seem to be a multi stemmed single tree.

Well, it doesn't state that no additional trees were planted later. Multi-stemmed sequoias are rare, but they do exist, so I suppose it's a possibility.

Looks to me like it is layered - the lowest branches have been low enough to touch the ground, taken root, and their tips turned erect and grown into additional trunks. I've not seen this with Giant Sequoia before, but it does happen frequently with some other species in Cupressaceae so it isn't too surprising.

Yea layering is probably the answer. I don't think more trees were plante later. They would have been planted too close together if they had been.
