ID help PLS from those who enjoy Jades (pics)

Hi Everyone,

I hope someone can help me narrow down what I have here.

I got 2 Jades from big box stores, with the same name but look different.

Both are labeled Crassula obliqua 'Tri color'.

One has more of a yellowish tint to it than the other, and it's driving me nuts. lol.

I would really like to make sure these are labeled correctly.

The one on the left of this pic. is the one I thought was the 'Tri color' and the one on right the obliqua.

And here they are one at a time. First what I thought to be the 'tri color variegated'

And this is the one I thought might be obliqua.. it has a lot more of the light area, and my camera didn't pick up the color as well as i had hoped, but it is a cream to yellow tint.

And here are some leaves from each plant.

I would appreciate any help from those of you who know more than me.

The differences are suttle, but I do feel they are 2 different plants and would like to know one way or the other.

Hi JoJo!

IMHO both these plants are obliqua variegata 'Tricolor', with some variation in the variegation being natural. I would like to see what Jade Gurus like Norma and Josh have to say on this, however.

Hi Jojo, I just wanted to say Congrats on your new Jades, very pretty! They both look very similar to me also, with slight color variations(probably the same variety)...I love them both, enjoy!

northerner_on, thanks so much for the helpful comments. I'll let it go and see what it does (what we think is ech) but I don't want any of them in back. Yes, I'm certain #2 is some type of aster. I was just excited to see the new color, then got my BS catalog and they have actually 3 similar there, was a color breakthrough. So it's a spinoff from one of those getting a seed mixed into the Purple Dome no doubt. From the brightness of the pink, it could be Alma Potschke but also September Ruby or Pink Dome. Pink D would be most likely since I bought the P Dome but I'll never know for sure. It doesn't matter. What does matter is that I learn what to look for when they emerge and try to work them into nicer shapes. They're supposed to be vaselike which is more pleasing to me plus you can pinch them back for more blooms. These two have ugly shapes which I think is due to damage I don't think I did, chemical damage possible from prior years but not last or this year. My neighbor offered to do something with the stump for me; his idea was to make a sitting bench out of it. I generally don't like stumps but couldn't afford the price to have it chipped out. If I let him do his thing then get a chance to get it ground out cheap, you know that wouldn't play well. Those flowers with the rose are hosta, not to worry. I've let those 3 hosta plants get way too big but it's a nice payoff in the fall with all those blooms. What you don't see in there are lamium I'm going to start pulling because it takes over. I had volunteer I thought it was campanula or Ladybells come up in several places. That bent and when horizontal it shoots up lots more bloom stalks. Someone here remarked about it and it happened with me. I thought they were "good" plants, had unsuccessfully tried to grow some variety of them from seeds. So maybe I do have the wild one and should get rid of it but I can assure you I have wild stuff that's much worse :-( Yes, my neighbor's Sweet Autumn is wonderful and the scent now competes with the Honeybell blooms on my hosta. It's been there for years but I can tell you really need a strong support for it. Rozanne flowers until our first hard frost (close to the ground they can go a little longer sometimes). Yes, I know you divide hosta in the spring, was just wondered if my physical strength was up to it other than slice off pieces. The ones with the purple blooms need to be dug up and cut apart; I doubt I can do that; they're packed. My poor raspberries; I've done the best I can do with them for now. They've given me the most satisfaction from we'ing yet. And it looks pathetic there. Maybe if they take off and the pile can be kept neater and under control, it will look better. That whole area needs mulched for raspberries. The leaf mold under all that recent junk from former years should make them happy I would think. I had a terrible time getting the chicken wire cage pried out; when they took down the tree, it mashed the wire all around. That pink rose is vicious; maybe I've let it go too long badly sited for a vigorous climber that the jury is out whether canes survive in our zone. The only ones that survive for me are ones that hug the ground. It's a pretty one and blooms all summer; actually there are a pair of them in there, grew them from bands I ordered on the web which was all I could get of that one. One lady in Kentucky and DH built the most gorgeous deck with pergola, and then have this rose climbing two stories. They were so beautiful at the top of that pergola. Somewhere else in the south, they let one climb a tree, it went up 30' high or more. Weird.

Am guessing on the last two, the 1st some kind of Rhipsalis, the 2nd some kind of Epiphyte. I'd suggest the pots for the last 2 are rather too big (tho' I see you got this nice, chunky mix which is likely to be fast draining). Pls. excuse me for not wanting to repeat all the tips for Holiday Cacti (both Thanksgiving & Xmas). Pls. search around here for the posts which include a link to "Holiday Cacti", the excellent link which is so often provided here. They explain care & culture better than I could. As to the Jades above, other than feeling like your BIL should not have watered in new cuttings, I'd leave the rest of that to others as well. Just pls. do a search on Jades or Crassula ovata in the meantime, as there are mountains of info. on this posted right here. My short answer on the Jades is since he watered them in, I would NOT water them AT ALL until I saw new growth, but perhaps others will feel differently. Good luck w/ them all!

Cyn, That is the way I had it arranged prior to this set-up. I really liked it, except for the fact that it was akward to always have to sit sideways to watch the TV, or sit in the chair apart from DH, KWIM? Plus, the TV was lost on the huge blank wall. Thanks for the compliments on the baby pics. Good idea to save the chair for grandbabies. I'm a person who gets rid of everything, but i like the idea of saving the chair & ottoman. So my 4 year old and I rearranged this morning, and I like it! The only tricky part will be running the cable over the fireplace somehow, but I'll let DH worry about that. (Why can't somebody invent wireless cable/satellite? It would solve so many decorating problems! LOL). What do we think? Better, right? Ad Lissa, you were totally correct about the fireplace wall being a different color. I was cleaning the walls today and noticed the difference at the corner. I can't believe I've never noticed that before. It is just a shade darker. So what to do with the fireplace? And this huge blank wall behind the couch? And the train table will be brought down to the basement when DH gets home, promise! Do you think I should seek out a square ottoman/coffee table type thing? What about an area rug? New seating area. Fireplace is to left, not visible. I moved the toybox and hung the painting on the wall. View with fireplace and curio cabinet: Chair seating area in front of window. I realize this is dark. My iphone does not have a flash. The TV is angled in the corner to the right of the chairs. blank problem wall: (there is about 3.5 feet between couch and wall, a corridor over to chairs) naked fireplace (and family dog): This is so fun, thank you for all your input!

I agree with Christopher and Nancy!
The one with reddish leaf-margins is certainly a 'tricolor.'
The other is a variegated obliqua, as well, and probably 'tricolor,' too.
A few months of that Arizona sunlight ought to make for a good determination.

Jojo,

I just don't get it - I guess they're not all Crassula ovata variegata, but they sure look like that to me.

As far as them turning red, I thought that would be due to colder temps / less water and/or more sun.

They should grow well for you.

I believe both are Crassula ovata 'Tricolor'. (which are variable...you may get some pink, the 3rd color) To my knowledge, Crassula obliqua has been included in C.ovata for some time.

Rosemarie:

If obliqua is now ovata, how do you distinguish, nomenclaturally (did I just make that word up?), for example, the former obliqua variegata from Mike's Jade with blunt leaf tips, which I have seen online as ovata variegata? Makes it confusing, in my opinion.

Crasula ovata is considered extremely variable in leaf shape...part of the description would include blunt leaf tips, as well as pointed. Yes, it may be confusing. Yes, it would then be C. ovata f. variegata. Whoever handles these things has placed several old species name together, under ovata now (C. argentea, C. portulacea & C. obliqua).

And to be exact the expert don't identify plants from just a leaf. and foolish to do so. I don't name plants this is a very old plant and variable. You have old names listed that have been drooped due to imprper nominclature.
Some of these are are interchangable. These are acceptable names for that plant at this time Crassula
Crassula ovata (Mill) argentea Thumb.
C.portulacea Lam.
C. obliqua Sholand Type Cape in Rondebossch Masson s.n. (BM, holo!)

C. articulata Zuccccagbu Stcios nom nud
C. nitida
C. subspecies arborescens with the following varieties
C subsp. undulatifolia

and there many be many varieties or forms, There is a full page of descriptions on the species. There is no description of each leaf. *Flora of Southern Africa. Gordon Rowley book on the species may be of help, the pictures are great. Vera Higgis, may be of some help, this book set me back 10 years. Frankly I think you are beating a dead bush, I have just finished looking in 5 books, and I certainly cannot give you a positive name on any Crassua ovata obliqua or Crassula ovata 'Blue Bird' perhaps
Gordon Rowley has written the latest book on Crassula if not the only one. Call the plant anything you want, the plant won't know the difference and either will we. Norma

Sorry for using outdated names; I hate causing confusion.

Is this how we should write 'tricolor' in the long-form (that Jeffrey so loves)? Taken from Peter Lapshin's site:

Crassula ovata ssp. obliqua f. variegata cv. Tricolor

Assuming this is correct, then the variegated oblique form (mentioned by Christopher) would be:

Crassula ovata ssp. obliqua f. variegata

And the green leaf oblique form would simply be:

Crassula ovata ssp. obliqua

I think.. lol! I'm more confused now than when I started this thread. :)

These are from Cactus collection, which is known for wrong labels! So that is why i'm courious. :)

From google and some threads here, I was thinking the one on the right was called obliqua. Boy it gets confusing! :)

I'll get them out to get some sun. I just got them recently, and have been moving stuff around the yard.
Anxious to see how they color up.

JoJo,

be careful with that AZ sun. i live in PA and my 'tricolor' does not do well in direct sun, so i would very carefully ease them into direct sun. i get the best color out of my 'tricolor' when it is growing. it does not seem to have to do anything with the sun. this plant sits in a south window with good winter sun, but it is not enough sun to color a hummel's sunset. when it is actively growing it gets it's best color.
