i agree.. move some other perennial from a 'good' spot .... into the 'bad' spot.. and use the new hole for a hosta ... and either.. sanitize EVERYTHING in the procedure or use two shovels.. and never use the 'other' shovel on your hosta .... and after you set the other plant in .. and touch that soil ... go wash your hands before resuming play in the hosta .... not having surgical sterilization methods available.. i would tend toward liquid antibacterial dish soap and the scrubber sponge .... to remove all plant sap ... do not cross contaminate your garden ... ken

I second what David said. And I think it depends on how hard the repot is on the plant. When I am pulling a plant out of gritty mix the mix falls off easily and I dont have to make sure I get all the old media off, so its easier on the plant. So, I only need to wait 4-7 days. In contrast, if I am dealing with a repot from a new purchase, with compacted soil stuck to all the roots, and I have to detangle the roots and get it all off, then I make sure to give the plant at least 10 days before watering. It will definitely be harder on the plant, and it needs that time to heal.

I'm just starting and learning, too. I've had my worm bin maybe 6 weeks, and I had to start with only about 50 worms. I overfed the heck out of those guys at first. They haven't come close to catching up, even now. I thought about maybe throwing the first couple of feeds into the outdoor compost and leaving them with just bedding for a while, but I decided against it. I keep hearing that worms thrive best with neglect, just stay out of their way. So I've been neglecting them, for the most part. I only check on my guys 3-4 times per week. All I do is maintain moisture level, look at worm behaviour for a minute or two, give it the sniff test, and add some clean bedding if it's beginning to smell bad. One time I broke up some junk mail bedding clumps that had solidified into two inch nuggets of hardened wood pulp, but that's it. The worms are doing fine with that treatment, so far. They're not trying to escape, they're active but seem to be calm and deliberate about it, they're leaving cocoons, and with their isopod neighbors they're slowly but surely wearing down the bedding and old feed. Smells are minimal, the bin usually smells like damp soil and that's all. I did sprinkle a little bit of crushed eggshell into the system after I got my makeshift grinder working, two days ago. I noticed about half of it has already gone missing. I wonder if my worms will eat faster, now that I've provided them with grit for dentures.

It was almost a re-pot, but not quite. I got rid of all the old soil but I did not trim any roots. I did the re-pot now, rather than in the spring, because I was afraid the plant was having trouble with the soil it's been in forever, and so root trimming just seemed risky on top of that. Unfortunately I didn't take pictures of the roots, and I don't think there were as many as I would have liked to see... but it didn't look hopeless either. (But I am new at looking at roots... learning to look at them is a big step for me. Why I was always so worried about it, I don't know. Also, I can't lift the pot, I have to tip it over. So that's probably part of why I didn't look before.) Thank you for the kind words! I know I can't really do anything but wait ... I was just hoping there would be a way to tell, one way or the other. I have one cutting that maaaaaaaaay make it. Otherwise, this plant is pretty easy to find around here. I just want to keep it alive for sentimental reasons, really. I am tired of killing off plants! It's so sad.
