Got WebCam?

I bought myself a Logitech QuickCam (WebCam) a couple of days ago and yesterday installed it on my computer, using Skype on the internet. (If I can do it, anyone can). It was easy and fast to install and only cost $20. Skype is a free service provider on the internet.

(What a worthwhile investment this has been for me already!!!)

It is so wonderful to be able to see and talk to my darling daughter and my sweet little 18 month old baby granddaughter! Little Maya was smiling and crying out,

"Guh-rannie! Guh-rannie! I wuh you Guh-rannie!"

My heart nearly melted into a little puddle to see their faces and speak to them like that and hear Maya say I love you Grannie.

Maya knows my face because my thoughtful daughter made her a little photo album all her own with photos of everyone in our extended family. Every night when Maya goes to bed, she kisses our photos and tells us all goodnight. She knows my voice because we talk on the phone nearly every day. But now we can visit live, face to face, and it will almost be like we are together. I will no longer be a stranger to her and I am so grateful for that.

My daughter's eyes were filled with tears. We have missed one another so much. I am so happy to see her beautiful, loving face. (tears, tears, tears of joy)

Every computer guru Granny & Grampa should have a WebCam!

I am with you Annie. A few years ago my youngest daughter went to London to study for a semester and just a few months before she left, my oldest daughter gave birth to the first grandchild. We bought a webcam and "talked" to her that way. She could see her nephew grow while she was gone and it helped us stay connected with her and helped her bond. It was nice!!!!! I am glad it works for you. Family means everything and staying connected in todays world is even more important than before. Happy Web caming :)

Second hand info here, but I have a friend who did this with his grandaughter also - the Grampy-cam. Tho they're only a couple of driving hours apart, it has served very well and allowed him to watch her grow and keep his image in her mind, especially in her formative months/years. This is a really nice upside of technology!

muphasta, Thank you so much for doing this!!! I'm spending far too much time watching her - to the detriment of my landscaping chores. Looks like a wet and breezy day, but she's hangin' in there. Congrats, and break out the candy cigars! Sometimes they remove unhatched eggs, sometimes not. I like to wait at least 3 extra days to see if it will hatch, but after that, a nestling would be so far behind the others, it would not likely be able to compete and would not survive anyway. You don't have to remove unhatched eggs, but usually I do. They are SO fragile, though, it must be done very carefully. You don't want to crush it and soil the nest, which would surely attract ants and other problems. You can use a spoon; I have a nice plastic one that came with MiracleGro that has 2 ends, one end is very deep and holds the egg nicely so it won't roll out. BlueBars

I have an 3.5mm extension cord for my headset. The mic stays plugged in all the time and I can easily remove or plug in the headset speaker wire without fighting at the back of my case. About $5 at Radio Shack. That way if my wife wants to hear my Skype conversation I use the main speaker but if she is watching television I can listen through the headset. My old headset with mic included was a Logitech, the model with different colours to cover the ear pieces and can be had for under $20. It was very comfortable and worked good, I now have a Sennheiser headset with great sound for music but it is not as comfortable as the Logitech. Some newer cases do come with connections in the front but you could try looking for an insert that will fit in one of the 5 inch front bays where your CD player is. Alternately you could get a USB headset (providing you have a spare USB port on the front of course) I see they are available these days.

Schoolhouse, it's mostly laptops that come with webcams. Some monitors used to have them built in but I haven't followed monitors closely over the past years so whether that fad passed or not, I'm not sure. My experience with Skype is so-so at best. Sometimes it works great, other times it cuts out, freezes and loses connection. Much depends on the internet logjam, the users connections and even what's running on the computers. I have far better results with Yahoo Instant Messenger. Less resources required and more flexibility. Skype is a backup for me. I definitely see the draw of things like Skype or the like. How nice for all of you, Annie! When I was little, a neighbor used to get tape recordings from her grandchildren who lived on the other side of the world. It seemed remarkable at the time, that she could listen to their voices.

DH got one of those cameras last year. I wanted to set it up outside and put it on my web site so I can keep an eye on the outdoor cats while I'm at work. Couldn't find a spot to point it, though, that wouldn't also capture me while I'm putzing around outdoors.

We have web cam, Annie. When my DD1 and family moved to Washington state last year they bought one for each related family group as a Christmas gift. They keep in touch with cousin, aunts and uncles and even us Granny's and Poppa's!

I'm so happy this little piece of technology has brought you so much happiness.
