I have 3 out of four that are al budded up. I have a fourth that is not going to bloom this year. I will post pics later.

I just pulled my Christmas Cactus indoors a few minutes ago...
it's soaked from all the rain we had yesterday, and the temperature is dropping.
No buds on mine yet.

Congrats Linda...Lucky you!! NO buds or even the slightest hint on mine. No big surprise since I know it needs cooling which hasn't arrived yet :o)

Do you feed yours? I never do..I also find that mine flower, but not as abundantly as yours..I must be missing a step...They are still outside in the cold,and a couple in the dark garage...One is getting tiny buds while I am still waiting on the others..

I have 4 pots three have buds they are still outside we have not had our first frost yet. I usually do not bring mine in until it gets down in the low 30s.

I don't feed mine, but they spend the whole summer outside on the north side of my house, and they don't come in until it gets cold (about to freeze) and then I leave them in the cool downstairs until they are budding and I move them upstairs so I can enjoy all the flowers. this year their buds were about the size of peas when I move them inside....thats a first for me...

Holiday cactus is not very exciting most of the year...but boy when they bloom, it sure makes up for all the months they just sit there. I just wish the blooms would last a little longer for me.

Glad to hear they can take it down to mid 30's.

Hi - Four of my holiday cactus are blooming and look great. I have two that are still outside in my unheated greenhouse that haven't started even setting buds yet though.

Yes, that was a perfect description, the Christmas lights, I thought the same thing, VERY nice.

Too warm still here in NYC, low 70s today (end Oct?), maybe days aren't short enough either. The 2 TCs I have now, I got after their last bloom, so I don't know when to expect it, am curious to see.

even though this "cold" front isn't that cold it should be enough to cause them to bloom. I give mine a little fish emulsion when I'm feeding everything else, so once or twice a year they get a diluted concentration.

You are so right, most of the year they aren't that exciting but when they bloom...WOW!
Anxious to see what colors are in the stores this year.

Hi all I finally got a picture of my old christmas cactus,

I did a alot of pruning as I sent out cuttings and a few starter plants from this plant and I think it helped it grow bigger, its looking good and lots of buds....
I'll try and post a picture when they are opening....

I believe that pruning strengthens these plants and allows them to support more growth/blooms in the future.
I'll probably do a major trimming every other year, from here on out. And next May....a full re-potting...!

I too, would like to repot. your plant like my plant are both big and have woody branches...
how do you go about repotting them without killing, or at the lease braking the plant up???? any suggeation????
I wanted to repot this summer but chickened out, I thought I would kill it...or it would brake up and I want to keep it all in one pot.....maybe if I hear how you are going to do it I can learn from you....thank you....linda

I would lightly tie together the bases of the separate woody trunks.
Lift up the foliage, maybe with a friend's help, and then tie the base as you would a bouquet of flowers.
I set the rootball in any empty container while I prep the new pot.

Once re-potted, I put the plant into a protected, partially-shaded area for a week or so.
I expect some of the leaves to become limp. After a few days, the leaves should perk back up.
At this point, you know that the roots are back "online" taking up water and nutrients.

Two weeks after re-potting, I will fertilize with a half-strength dose of Foliage Pro.

Josh your CC is huge. I always thought CC would do better in a shallow pot, but yours is deep. Has your CC been potted in the same container very long? Toni

I've heard the same thing about shallow pots....but this CC has been using this deep pot for many years.
It hasn't been re-potted into new mix for three years now - and I can tell that the soil has compacted.

I can't wait to get its roots into fresh Bark!

Hi everyone, This is my baby. It's called Jolly Dancer. I've had the plant for over fifteen years and the people that I got it from said that they had it for many years. It started popping buds about a week ago. I've left it in the same spot inside the house for about five years now. The pot is 14 inches wide and the plant itself is just about three feet wide. It just got too heavy to move and I was afarid to break brancehs going through doorways. Since leaving it inside it has formed buds each year usually around the time we turn our clocks back. The window behind it is an east window. It also gets a lot of light from another window in front of it to the right which is a south window.

your plant is huge....
I just measured mine its in a 12" pot
and its span is 2 1/2' and hangs down about 18"
and I am seeing more buds then when I took and posted the picture above...I am hoping for a big showing of flowers this year...my friend that gave it to me said at the time it didn't bloom much...I am hoping it will make a change...
my holiday cactus are so full of flowers and every segment has 2 or 3 buds or open flowers...there will be flowers on them for a long time...
I have to say a BIG THANK YOU to all on here that have shared their growing expertise.....
and that is why I have such good looking plants....

I can certainly understand your hesitation and apprehension on repotting something that big and very sensitive to branch "accidentally" breaking. Good luck Linda and Josh on your project on repotting next Spring.

Hi and thanks for the compliments on the plant. I had a spring cactus ( oval leaves with trumpet like flowers ) that was just about as big as this one that I gave to a good friend a couple years ago. She would salivate every time she was here and saw it. As you all know some of these plants get get pretty big and then you start running out of room. You get so attached to them so the last couple years I've given away some of my smaller ones so that I have room for the bigger ones.

Not a heck of a lot..

But I took a couple of pictures of a couple of mine that I have in the very cold almost dark garage..I think I see a bud..:-)

This one has been through the ringer..I have never changed the mix, it has fallen dozens of times, it has frozen over twice, and completely gone dry from forgetting to water for weeks, and it still lives..lol..You can tell, but it is still growing bud..I am going to take better care of it now since I am liking these more and more

what is the best culture for these? full sun or part shade?

Part shade only pls. thse are originally jungle cacti & used to being up in the crotches of tree branches; therefore dappled light is what's recommended.

In direct sun they're likely to burn badly.
