I thought I would start a new thread for bloggers and at the same time announce my own blog.

I know that there are several here who blog now and I thought it would be nice if we were able to come here and share tips, techniques or answer questions, when possible, for other bloggers. I have no formal skills and there is soooo much I'd like to learn but find it very difficult to find the information I need to make changes to the code and pull off the things I'd like to do.

Also this could serve as a listing of all the Cottagers blogs so we can find them and get them into our favorites. I've been pretty hit and miss with this and would really like to form a collection of them for my own enjoyment.

Hi Memo,

I've been blogging for less than a year. Now that I'm retired, I have found that I missed writing. I was in marketing(product management and process consulting) for a software company. So, I started writing about my garden, writing about how we built our house and our recent trip to Tuscany. I decided to make my blogs about tips and sharing my experiences. That's the mentor in me, another role that I played when I was in a corporate environment.

You can start with my gardening blog and link to my other blogs from there.

The house building blog started as a book, but when I saw the publishing charges for all of the photos and drawings that I wanted to have in full color, I decided to move all of my writing to the blog in small segments instead of long chapters.

Cameron, Thanks for the links. Your blogs are fascinating and very well laid out (of course, since you are a professional) I have a lot more reading to do before I get through all of them but I am enjoying your writings. I now have them tucked away in my "Cottage Friends Blogs" file.

Hi Terrance nice to meet ya and thanks for the reply! Yes I must get outside in scratch that dirt. Where I live now, in Aberdeen, we gravelled the whole backyard due to having multiple horses in the house. LOL..my great danes make a terrible miss on grass so it was the only way. And mud? As in garden? Would be destroyed unless I built a fence around it. We are planning to buy a house soon, so hope to change all that. I can not wait to get into roses outdoors and perenials, grow my own veggies. Lily's too! I hope he builds me a greenhouse, as I am a die hard fan of tropicals. Plumeria and hibiscus are my fave's. Been growing them indoors for a year under lights, and lots of blooms. I also enjoy propagating and starting from seed indoors. Fun stuff! I guess when you grow up as a small town girl, you stick to your roots..hahahaha..too funny! Krista - sorry I left Sharon's name in the original post, so she knew I ressurrected it.

When Willows said "scions", I think that's a terrn generally reserved for grafting material. People otherwise call them cuttings. I _think_ I've read here and there of something being difficult to graft...in the sense of a specific cultivar rather than an entire genus. Of course, grafting is more of than not these days reserved for things that are difficult to _root_ at least as far as ornamental horticulture goes. (the opposite seems the case in agriculture, where grafting is often easier and more productive than rooting) It's not uncommon at all to read of things being difficult to root...whether clones, species, or entire genus like oaks. It could be that the best option will be sending it to someone who has really mastered commercial cloning, like Briggs. You get the impression they were producing that purple yucca for a while not because a purple yucca was a logical compliment to their main business, which is rhododendron liners, but because they were the only company on the face of the planet that was willing to figure out how to clone it.

I've never heard of most of these blogs, but went to see the HoH house. It does read like catalog, but more Grandinroad than Pottery Barn. Love the home of Brooke (Velvet & Linen), but I only click on her blog a few times a year to catch up. I enjoy the humor of Victoria Elizabeth Barnes and try to check on hers twice a month. I'm with Tinam. Many of the bloggers are paid and/or get free items from various sources to actually do things to their houses. Those that are good at it - like Miss Mustard Seed - end up with contracts or TV shows (Pioneer Woman). I used to check MMS on occasion but find I don't have the time to read blogs, and when I did, I didn't find them very interesting. I don't want to know how to do a tablescape, decopauge or watch them unpack a desk chair (I kid you not!). Atticmag founder Jane (Rococogurl @GW) reached out to me via GW to feature my kitchen, which led to me writing for Atticmag for a few years. She later featured my home. We posted something from our own houses maybe a few times a year - if we were doing something worth showing readers. Would I want to blog? No. Did I like writing about something going on at my house or DD2, as it is quicker/easier for me to write about! I only wish I had been writing for AM when DD1 was living in San Francisco since she had/has great taste!

Oh, thanks for starting this thread! I started blogging a short time ago. Has some 'issues' with blogger, but finally figured it out. Back in business. Yippee!

The theme of mine is creativity. Occasionally I post about gardening, but every post includes a garden photo.

I look forward to reading your blog, as well as those of everyone else.

A friend on another forum who has recently started blogging, said she has a "test blog". Now when she wants to rearrange or change HTML code or whatever, she does it on the test blog first so she doesn't mess up her real blog! Sounds like it's maybe the thing to do eh?

You can leave your blog in draft, but you can't see how it really looks until you publish. The test blog sounds like a good idea. I find I have better control using HTML than the Compose editor.

Memo, great blog and I love the name Quilted Hills.

How's the goose doing? Poor little guy, perhaps he/she needs to see a vet otherwise the legs won't heal right. Must be in a great deal of pain, God love him.

Edna, The goose is doing well. He's starting to move around a bit, enough to keep spilling his food and water or getting too far from it to reach it. I keep a close eye on him. Rick looked him over pretty good and he said he'll heal. I guess he knows more than I do but I still feel awful that it even happened. Thanks for caring.

Yay! Fellow cottage bloggers! Thanks for starting this thread Memo. I'll have to add you all to my list. I've been blogging for a few years now. But I keep switching hosts so I have to start my blog anew each time.

I thought about that when I started on Blogger (what if I hate this template and site?) but I just went ahead and started and so far it's going great.

Hey all bloggers, if you want a GREAT, FREE photo editing software you must must must try PhotoScape. It is so incredibly easy to use. Start at view. Click your image to bring it up into the main tray. Do your changes down at the bottom. It has unlimited undo. When you get it like you want it just click save and it will save to your hard drive in JPG. Then you can just grab it while you're in blogger directly from your hard drive. To add text and other very cool things like frames, texture etc to your pictures it's just a matter of clicking or typing it's that easy! I tried several photo editing sites to do my Header and what a PIA. This was so simple and I'm so happy! Just thought I'd pass it on.

I use The GIMP and have been using it for years. It's probably one of the best image manipulation programs out there, comparable to Photoshop. Best of all it's free, open source. So download away.

It's super easy to use, too.
