Here's a contrary opinion about pruning from Four Winds Growers: "Citrus may be pruned to any desired shape. Pruning is fine any time of year, except in the winter for outdoor trees. Pinching back tips of new growth is the best way to round out the trees without impacting future fruit. Citrus will look fuller with occasional pruning to shape leggy branches. Some trees may develop erratic juvenile growth above the graft. If so, prune for shape and balance. Any growth above the graft can eventually bear fruit. Do not be afraid to cut off branches. It will stimulate growth and multiple branches from the site you pruned. Well-pruned trees have higher fruit yields and are less prone to branch breakage." Heavens, You didn't mention how many hours of direct sunlight your citrus are getting (8 hrs is best). If you're getting much less than this, you could be deficient. Also, keep in mind that there are a variety of windows with various degrees of tinting to block out UV and other rays that are otherwise present outdoors. You mention that your trees are indoors all year. This is a divergence from the experience of most on this forum in Northern climes. Do you have the option at all of putting your trees outdoors during the warmer months? If not, you may want to invest in grow lights again with the appropriate wavelengths of lght for good growth. Your pH is best if kept in the low 5-high 6 range. You may want to add 1/2-1 capful of vinegar to each watering/fertilizing. My final thought is in regard to your pruning. I understand you doing so to keep the trees smaller; however, know that by doing so, you may be jeapardizing the tree's ability to make new leaves to photosynthesize/rejuvenate itself to be able to eventually produce fruit. Yes Cassandra the figs and brugs are in pots as well, the brugs and figs might be fine in ground but they would probably die back to the ground if we are going to get as much snow as they are predicting and have to completely regrow after winter. This way I am able to keep this years structure to build off of next year, for the brugs especially that's inciting to me because I want large specimens and for some of the figs it means i'll get brebas. The brugs apparently don't like it too wet and can rot in our area over the long rains. I plan to put some of the figs in ground after we move and take some cuttings and trial the brugs in ground too. I am certainly a crazy plant lady, every time I come home with a new tree my boyfriend gives me this quizzical look and asks me if I need more trees/plants. I always say yes ;) My boyfriend owns our house so I am able to have much more than I did when I was in an apartment, it just seems silly to plant much in the ground if we know we aren't staying here but I can't wait! I am heading to the All About Fruit Show this weekend to try some varieties of PawPaws , Quince, and other exciting fruit that I want to put in my new yard, space allowing. I once upon a time was a chef, I went to culinary school and cooked for a few years before trading it in for more traditional hours but that certainly motivates me to grow edibles and exotic things that I can't easily find in stores or can find but at a hefty price tag. One Green World Is where I got my Yuzu a few weeks ago, they don't have it listed as in stock on the website but he had a few recently grafted and he sold me one. It should be able to do just fine in ground here and would make some tasty dishes/drinks. He also has Australian Finger Limes, Buddhas Hand and Sudachi which also are fantastic/novel from a culinary standpoint. Bergamot if your into making your own tea blends and sour oranges if you like various Latin cuisines (or marmalade), Kaffirr limes for Thai cooking, Calamondin for Filipino foods, Kumquats for various things, you get the idea ;). The Sudachi is on my list as they are currently out of sock but I have the others (except for kumquats as I really don't like them) and they are some of my favorite trees, the Buddhas Hand in particular is my favorite tree due to its intoxicating smell and unique appearance and applications. I think loving to cook makes it easier to go overboard with the trees as I can see so many uses for them other than ornamental's. Alanna, the cuttings are about 6-8” long. I remove all the leaves except the top 2 or 3. I use plastic pots which are 3” diameter by 5” tall, which gives me room to put about 2 - 3” of the stem down into the soil. I cut the end at 45 degrees and scrape the side of the stem about an inch up, then I dip the cutting into rooting powder (including the scraped bit). I wet regular potting soil and poke a 2-3” deep hole with a chopstick, then put the end of the cutting down into the hole and squish the soil around it. Then I cover with a zip lock bag partially taped to the pot leaving a gap so there can be a little air circulation. If the bag doesn’t support itself, I’ll use three bamboo skewers pushed into the edges of the soil before putting the bag over, so that the plastic bag doesn’t touch the leaves. I put them in a tray on my sunny windowsill and water the tray every few days to keep moist. I think it takes about two months before it roots.
