Brown Gunk On My Lime Tree's Leaves And Bark

Hi all,

Okay, I have two questions here about my lime tree...

the first is I have this brown gunk forming on my leaves and on the bark up and down a branch of my lime tree. It tends to go right up the middle of the leaves. I took these pictures after cleaning most of them off so it was much thicker before, obviously. It had blocked the light in some cases causing the leaves underneath to go yellow. We were away on a trip for a while and I believe it might be what caused all the leaves on one branch to drop off.

Secondly, there is a ahh, scaley?, brown layer covering the bark on most of the tree, but not all of it. I'm wondering what this is as it could just be normal. I was thinking perhaps it was the bark of the grafted root stalk creeping up and trying to take over??? but have no idea if that's possible.

You can see the root stalk and bark here:

and the leaves here:

And if IMG's are on this forum...

Any ideas? Thanks so much!

Walter.
