Anyone has ruby red grape fruit in container

Hi,

Has anyone tried the ruby red grape fruit in container? What's your results? My local garden center has it, before I drag it home, I want to know that how well it's doing in containers.

it depends on the rootstock, some rootstocks grow dwarf like flying dragon and some will grow to be large trees

How are you?

Yes I have a ruby red grapefruit, about 6 inches tall from a cutting...lol..Tiny, but healthy, and it is already about to produce buds...Sometimes I like starting my own trees from childhood,not from seed tho, different story, so they have to get use to my care, the shape I like them in, and use to their surroundings....LOL..
Sort of like buying a puppy and raising it to be what you would like it to be, hopefully, instead of buying a full grown one and having to worry if it will respond to it's new care and owner.....

I had one that was on a rootstock two winters ago, but I bought it full of BLOOMS, WOW so full of BLOOMS and healthy, but along with it came spidermites that were so abundant, that I had to return it almost immediately..So I never had the chance to see how well it did with me. But BOY, was it a most beautiful citrus I ever saw. Most fragrant too. Seemed it would do well, without the mites of course, those dang things!!

I have been battleing them on ALL my other plants ever since...

ashley: My favorite grapes earliest to latest are: Flame, red, very crisp: Summer Royal, blue, best flavor, sensational raisins; Princess, yellow, muscat flavor; and Crimson, red, very late, crisp, sweet, lasts until January in my greenhouse. These are all CA grapes bred for the heat of the central valleys. Jupiter is highly recommended as a disease resistant, muscat flavored grape. Other good eastern seedless are Canadice and Glenora. The eastern seedless are more disease resistant than CA grapes. They might well be better for your situation and they are good grapes. They might require less heat. Powdery mildew requires either frequent sulfur or a systemic fungicide. The bunch rots require a couple sprays and/or thinning of those with tight clusters. I'm talking thinning out the berries not the clusters. My favorite for flavor and eating quality is Summer Royal. The only grape that is nearly as good as any fruit in my situation and taste. I've never heard of Blueberry grape. It might be good don't know. Glenora often reminded me of blueberries but it's actually better. Summer Royal is better yet and same color as blueberries. Check out the grapes bred by Univ of Arkansas. These include Jupiter and Reliance. Also try to find out what they grow in the PNW. Lon Romberg is in Oregon and knows a lot about grapes, sells some. He has a website but am not sure I have his name spelled right. The grapes in my greenhouse are trouble free except for grape leafhopper but overly vigorous. A high tunnel or just some clear poly suspended over your vines might help by providing more heat and keeping the clusters dry. Good luck!! The Fruitnut

UPDATE on my ruby red.... I am really happy that I got this pretty little tree...it is such a pleasure watching it grow... and it really seems to enjoy being hereLOL I still have it in the container...and it has at least doubled in size since I purchased it.... it origanally put on about five small fruit....only one remains now..but it is the size of a small grape....and the tree itself is very small considering it is trying to grow a fruit.... the folaige( leaves) continue to come on and them mature to a darker color... well I am just really pleased with this little thing.... I hope I can keep it alive a long long time.....and possibly plant it in ground in the future....far future... please feel free to continue with suggestions.....I will happily take all and any.... this is such fun....

Evdesert is probably right! Since it is grafted though, you could still get fruit after a year or two. What zone are you in? That could impact your growth rate a little. Looks like your tree is a year old, but could be younger. Hard to tell off the angle. If it's younger and it flowers, I'd punch off any fruit that holds until next year. 4 of my three year old trees have fruit. One is a grapefruit, so who knows! Keep us posted.

As an in ground tree grown in the proper climate, Star Ruby will be edible by Christmas, fairly good by the end of January, but never does get extraordinary. Grapefruits become sweeter when grown in sticky-humid locations with high heat, because high humid climates have little change in day/night temperatures. Grapefruit can be grown in containers, but are the worst choice of citrus to grow as container plant, Grown in a residential atmosphere, where it is impossible to provide the high temperature and sticky humidly required, the fruit cannot develop sweetness and matures both slowly and poorly. An indoor winter grown container grapefruit, will take what will seem like an eternity to mature, and still will not become a quality tasting fruit. You will be able to grow the tree, but you will always be disappointed with the fruit.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the response, I know you have it. I am sure it's in the right mix:) I think it's going to take off next year and you will have a giant fruit.

I am going to get one Chandler Pomelo and Chinese Pomelo imported from four winds. I will see how it goes.

BTW, did you put your Ponderonsa lemon in the gritty mix? I repoted mine into the gritty mix, it grew tons of new roots but no new growth for some reason.

I have a ruby red grapefruit purchased at WalMart last November in sad condition in one of those 12" x 4" plastic thingies. It went into a container along with a valencia Orange in a container also. We put the lime and the lemon in the ground. Those Containers are growing faster and bigger. Strange. They are all on a drip system, so get water every 2 days for 2 hours on a 1/2 gallon emitter. I put my coffee grounds on all of them, but the containers rock!! The lime is doing better than the lemon at the moment, but the lemon just put out a huge branch which I pinched to stop it. All the rest have put out at least 8 branches with multiple leaves. I'm thinking fruit next year.
