Issues with gritty & 5-1-1 mixes
Comments (16)Ok I am just baffled now. I have 2 large pots, one that I put a big elephant ear bulb in, and the other had (that's right....HAD) cannas in it. Both were in the 5-1-1 mix. I planted them about a month ago, kept them inside and put them out in the day time when temps were above 60. I kept them out unless the temps dipped below 50 at night. Anyways, I went to check to see how moist there were just a bit ago, and of course, top inch or two bone dry, but moist below. My elephant ear has sprouted, and is growing taller each day. But, no cannas. I had a tiny little sprout last week, so I figured it's time to dig and see whats up. Sure enough, they were all rotten. I'm not chalking this up as a mix issue, but probably too cold of a spring issue, although the elephant ear is alive and well. I've never tried either of them, so maybe cannas need more warmth. But, even though my jalapenos are doing good, I am starting to worry. With today's winds, the top 2 inches of the 5-1-1 mix were bone dry, after watering yesterday. As always, moist below that. Hopefully I don't kill everything I plant this year, because that'll soil my reputation as never killing anything. 2 of my bonsai starters, a chinese elm and cotoneaster, are looking like crap too, probably due to the barerooting I gave them. They are in gritty mix. I am having some bad luck so far this year..... Joe...See MorePlumeria cuttings rooted/gardenia in gritty mix/potted plants pic

Comments (8)Yes Al, I understand your concern, but our weather is weird this year, like Mike's. Cool and wet, not too much sun. The problem with two of my gardenia trees is that they are already declining even with the good light and humidity. Plants slightly wilted even the soil is kind of moist. I pulled it out the pot, there are many dead roots and some new roots growth as well. The healthy gardenia tree doesn't wilt until the soil is bare moist or the pot is very light. I am quite sure they can't survive the coming winter. If I don't repot now, I probably lose them in the winter. I have all kind of Jasmines, which is in peat based soil, I will leave them to the next spring, they are tough plants. Funny thing is that I got exactly same gardenia trees from two vendors, one is potted in the bark and peat based soil, the other is peat and some saw dust, it's the 2nd one that is dying. The barked and peat (around 1:1 ratio, no perlite) is doing great, some root death, but lots of healthy roots as well. For gardenia, if the pot doesn't contain enough air, wet for two days in a row is enough to cause root rot. Once root rot started, it spreads quickly. That's why gardenia is so hard to grow....See MoreAny gritty mix die hard fans find that some don't do so well
Comments (52)Gosh I hope not Rina. The first time i was in Canada was in Toronto. Drove through from New York and there was a riot that broke out. By the stadium or sports arena..whatever you guys call it. I think there was a game going on (obviously) lol, but that's when i really learned how seriously some take football! I think it was in the 70's...or maybe the 60's? i don't remember anymore lol....See Morecactusmcharris, interior BC Z4/5
