Impulse-purchased maidenhair -- what have I gotten myself into?!?

We've got two very shady planters outside the front door, and I was looking for something on which to 'float' these large green-and-white caladium. After not finding any coleus or anything else I really loved, at one nursery I fell for a pair of maidenhair ferns. Against my better judgment, I bought them. Also in the caladium-fern container: small-leaf oxalis (purple) and white double impatiens. It all looks great, and hopefully will look even better as they fill in.

Unless I kill one or more of them first!

I think my potting mix is pretty good, but now I'm wondering about keeping the maidenhair moist without drenching the rest of it. What do we think about a little 'necklace' of moss or even those magical water-retaining crystals around the base of it? Unnecessary? A great idea?

I'm also trying to institute a regimen of misting them every day, in between waterings, keeping a spray bottle near the front door and hitting them when I do the morning dog-walk. What do you think: purposeful or a waste of time?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

Fred
