Do Squirrels eat young Pine candles/cones?

Greetings....

Could anyone tell me whether young pines are endangered by grey squirrels, with any high degree of probability, going for either the candles, when they emerge, or their tiny cones? I have just received two young pines through the mail that I am keeping in containers for the time being. One is a miniature and looks very vulnerable. Should I spread some Bonide Shot-Gun Repels-All Animal Repellant around the base of these conifers? I don't have time to build any kind of enclosures for them that would be legitimately squirrel proof. Last Spring I lost my Picea pungens 'The Blues' because a hungry squirrel ripped it apart going after the tender new growth and I was devastated, so I'm feeling very protective this year. Any advice would be immensely appreciated.
