Transplanting Baby Jap Painted Fern

triciae

I have a hedge of Japanese Painted Ferns that are thriving. Summer of '04, I noticed very tiny spots on bare soil about 10' from the hedge that looked like teenie, tiny baby ferns. I left the area alone all last summer and not much happened from the tiny plants. This spring, however, it's clear I do have baby Japanese Painted Ferns. The fronds are about 3-4" long and clearly show their parent's colors. They are all massed/grouped together in this one spot. There are lots of them.

My questions: I'd like to transplant these little guys & nurture them along. I've never had Japanese Painted Ferns reproduce like this so I'm rather pleased. I don't want to kill them. How careful do I have to be in digging/dividing, etc.? They look so delicate. Should I even try to separate individual plants or just dig a small group & transplant them as a group of 3-5 babies?

Thanks for advice.
