Wolfgang, ofcourse I know Leen Konijn personaly, 20 years ago he was the one to who I looked up to, he was like a kind of teacher to me and I bought a lot of plants from him which are now standing in my Pinetum as motherplants for propagating.

Let me tell you that there are more nurserymen then you can imagine who had renamed plants for whatever reason.
I'll never get a straight answer if I'll ask him that quiestion because he knows how I'm standing into the conifer world now...

Once and I while I discover that 2 look alike plants are one and the same.
My latest discovery was that Picea pungens 'Stanley's Pygmy' and Picea glauca 'Cecilia' are the same one.
The last name is the right one...

nice pics to show the difference between both. Spiralis grows very slowly, Rasen is a fast grower and becomes a narrow tall tree. Spirals is often mentioned as a dwarf cultivar. It needs time, but it will gow to a tree in time. 20 years ago I saw a plant ca. 100 years old, near a famous castle in Kronberg/near Frankfurt. This was a marvellous tree, 10 meters high.I hope the plant is still alive. Today the park is a golf club.

This is a totaly new Cryptomeria witches'broom which is hanging in the garden of a member of the Dutch Conifer Society.

Rispetto, are you sure that is 'Yokohama' ? i think he has very round and regular shape, maybe youth or did you have pruned?

Blue yew, I think 'Gracilis' isn't very rare, it's a little too much, but unusual yes. It's an old variety very interresting but no use a lot because it become big.

Gracilis is very hardy and a very good chance for Poland or the other Eastern European countries. The same in Zone 5 in the USA.The same with the Swedish selection ' Tateyama '. Very hardy.
Now problem with the deepeset temperatures in Germany.
' Gracilis' is not rare, Euan, you can buy it in many nurseries here.
A nice plant with very short needles.From far similar looking like Sequoiadendron.

I got an answer today from Leen Konijn-Nursery:

" The history of the 'Black Dragon' is for Mr. Konijn unknown.That's different from the Cryptomeria 'Pipo'. Mr. Leen Kolwijn himself found it in a park in the Netherlands. It is a sport of 'Yata Dusa' and he named it of Pipo the Clown. So it is definitely another plant if 'Black Dragon' was available before 1990."

Now there's another problem. What means 'Yata Dusa'. I thought it's a syn. for ' Yatsubusa' syn. 'Tansu'. Is there a source for the Japanese name ' Yata Dusa'.

I think also that the three are very similar, but only 'Yatsubusa' and 'Tansu' are synonyms, for me 'Yata Duta' become more bigger but stay with the compact and small foliage.
I don't grow 'Yata Duta' myself but often see big plants and labeled 'Yata Duta' and not 'Yata Dusa'.
I will ask my Japanese knowledge for the signification!

'Little Sonja' was found by Sonja Horstmann as a witches' broom in a 'Little Champion' in the garden of Wiel Linssen in The Netherlands.
There was no first name like 'H.B. Little Champion', it was immediatly 'Little Sonja', named by Wiel Linssen.

a long time ago I got also 'Pyramidata', but it was 'Gracilis'. Your plant with the needle - detail is ( my opinion ) ' Gracilis'. Please look at Cees website.www.hulsdonk.nl There is for me the right ' Pyramidata'. I hope, I'm right. Very rare. I haven't seen old plants.

I confirm what say Wolfgang, this look like 'Gracilis'. I already saw the same mistake in some nursery.

It does not like a normal ' Araucarioides' with mostly one central leader. It looks like ' Enko '. Please look at van Gelderens book "Conifers". But the Araucarioides - Group is strange and there are several Clons in Botanical Gardens and collections ( Araucarioides,Dacrydioides,Selaginoides.Lycopodiodes,Enko,Viminalis....)Not possible to see the difference at young plants.And not sure, if all are different. Don't think so. But nice to propagate scions from a characteristic motherplant.

'Little Yoko'
It's a sport of 'Yokohama' found in one old tree by one worker in a nursery in Netherland, it was first propagated by Wiel Linssen since already a few years but in low quantity.

Edwin, the graft was succesfull ? i had send you very smal scions.

Julien, 'Little Yoko' was found by my Dutch friend Huibert den Dunnen in a quite young tree at the nursery where he worked in the past.
During packing an order for a client he discovered this branch mutation and indeed, Wiel Linssen grafted some with a good result.

Unfortunately your scions were to small for making graftings so I decided to make cuttings of them.
I don't know yet if they rooted because next week we will start to put the rooted cuttings from a plug into a small pot.
I'll inform you then after this job is done...

Wolfgang, the 'Sekkan' is in bright full sun, and the color is hard to capture....
bronzy, orange, purplish, and with those even lighter colored growth tips. My other
Cryptomerias are much more purple bronze in their containers on the back deck.

I like this colour very much, Josh!

But here I've never seen this equal in full sun or shade.

It's very interesting with the winter colour , because some Cryptos never change but others change very different on different locations. It can be the soil, temperature,stress,age. Maybe some more.
But from my experience you can never say this cultivar ( which changes the colour ) has always this same winter colour.

Indeed, Wolfgang, thank you!
The color was not nearly this beautiful last Winter.
Only the lower branches turned bright rusty orange; and the new growth turned bright cream.
Last Winter, the intermediate purplish hues were absent. I'm hoping for an even more impressive
show next Winter.

We have had a mild Winter so far, with no snow and very little rain.
Our temperatures have ranged from overnight lows in the 20F's (-5C to 0C) to daytime
highs in the 60F's (17C). I think all of these have contributed to the coloring.
