Dawiff - I think that, by rights, the stars should be credited to "Dawiff's DH". I would say just go ahead and blurt out your answer. You may be right, or not. :-) It's up to others to decide if the question is still open.

I was looking for a trick.

I read 'subtract the number of zeros' as subtract six zeros, or ten zeros, or whatever. I see now that 'the number of zeros means 'what is the number of zeros written when you notate the number of kilowatt hours in a gigawatt?') -- Three, or 7, or any finite number, not a zero. Give credit for this insight to DaWiff's DH.

Here's my reasoning:

Newton had three laws of motion. (See below, if you're interested.)

Hydrogen atoms have only one proton.

A gigawatt is 1,000,000,000 watts, with 9 zeros.

So 3 + 1 = 4
4 x 8 = 32
32 - 9 = 23

Clue: there were 23 as in Mwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. You didn't think to count them, did you? :-)

I still didn't stump you all. Maybe next week I will have to get really evil!

Is not a gigawatt NORMALLY notated as (10^9) watts (ten to the ninth, I can't make a little nine that floats), and why is it spelled giga and pronounced Jiga?

Nell, I can see where we could have a difference of thought on whose normal we are talking about. Decades of teaching have my brain in the iron-clad habit of referring to 1.0 x 10^9 as scientific notation, and 1,000,000,000 as normal notation, as in that notation used in normal, non-geeky writing. There's a more correct name for it (decimal notation), but I settled on normal long ago as the term that would make instant sense to my students. I can see how someone, expecting trickery maybe, could think I meant normal for scientists. Sorry for the confusion.

giga - jiga

This is probably a good way to start a fight the next time you're in a bar full of physicists. It's true that the professor said jigawatt in Back To The Future, and a lot of people learned it that way (not I), but I think giga is probably a lot more common now, maybe due to the computer jockeys.
