Weekend Trivia: Sunday
Comments (15)I thought being the editor of the Oxford English Dictionary was the answer. I remember he deleted many words while including others including racial words that some found offensive. I think he also re-established the volunteer word submitters. The book I referred to was: The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester Professor James Murray, the first editor, discovered that Dr. W. C. Minor, had submitted more than ten thousand words. When they decided to honor him they were surprised to find that Dr. Minor, an American Civil War veteran, was in an English asylum for the criminally insane. Very interesting read. Edited to add: While I like Robbie and Hathaway and find Endeavor interesting, I sure miss good old crotchety Morse. Have been enjoying Vera, another crotchety English detective. Comments (16)Well, four stars for Carolb and three for everyone else. Indeed, gypsy is the nickname for the Rompa. They were given that name because people thought they looked as though they were Egyptian even though they came to Europe from India in the 9th century. Here are the two best options for stars. First one is okay, but the second, well, hope everyone has a good sense of humor and gets the gypsy connection. Have a marvelous week. We got no snow over the weekend or this morning. I am hopeful, but not optimistic about our chances for tonight. ð© Cynthia...See MoreWeekend Trivia: Sunday
Comments (28)DenmarkCongratulations! I think you all arrived! Denmark is the country. There was an attack in Copenhagen that killed two and wounded five and is being talked about as echoing Paris and the Charlie Hebdo and grocery store shootings. In this case, he attacked a cafe hosting a free speech debate and a synagogue where a bat mitzvah was underway. Both places had high security or there might have been a much higher death toll. The gunman was killed after fleeing the scene. Same sort of profile: homegrown, criminal, became an ideologically motivated killer in prison. There has not been an awful lot of coverage, it seems, although it finally hit the front page above the fold of the Post today. So sad and so very disturbing. I will never understand the mindset of people who behave so barbarically. Anyway, Denmark turns out to be much more impressive than I had imagined. I will link a page for you. I plan to check out some of the other countries as well. Okay, I do not get how these links work here niw. The link popped up in green at the beginning. Sigh. Let's see if I can copy stars for you. Not holding my breath. Have a wonderful week. They are predicting 4-8 inches of snow for us and continued cold temps near 0* F. I will take the snow with possible school closing (who am I kidding? If we get more than 2 inches, we close. Ha)....See MoreWeekend Trivia: Sunday
Comments (17)Nancy, I didn't think they reused songs on the series, except in the one flashback episode. Hmmm...Will wait to see what your answer is! Anyway, four stars (and one extra just because...) for all of you. Manutius did indeed create italics. He is also considered to be the father of the paperback book since he was the first to produce inexpensive books that could be carried easily. Nice job everyone. I wonder if TM is on his way to Florida. Hope so. It would be nice to get away from the cold for a bit! Manutius Have a wonderful week. I am home today because of ice. They could easily have gotten away with a two-hour delay, but I will take the day off with no complaints! Cynthia...See Moremidnightsmum (Z4, ON)
