I love your purchases. I live in the Seattle area so the pickings are a lot slimmer (as this type of plants go). I loved, loved, the Aloe, and, can you tell me the name of the three bigger plants on the left? Everything looks beautiful. Thanks for the pictures.

They are Brighamia rockii, native to the windward cliffs above the sea of the Hawaiian islands. This is my 1st attempt at growing this variety. I do have a large B.insignis that I've had for a few years. It's getting ready to flower, maybe another week or so( Will post a photo). Surprisingly these are fairly hardy here, as long as I keep them out of the hot afternoon sun. The heat will kill them more that cold, it survived last winters freeze(19deg) with no additional heat.

C&J Nursery(southern CA) had these beautiful B.insignis, they are about 3ft tall. and not for sale :(

are the Dendrosicyos deciduous like the other Socotrans?

Depends on the growing conditions. They are opportunistic, so at UC they are in leaf a majority of the year. For me they are deciduous because I keep them cooler in the winter.

Congratulations on your new finds! I sat this sale out this year - took some hefty will power but I made it! However I spent the day wondering what kinds of treasures I might have missed :~) It is always a fun sale but this year I am worried about fitting back into the greenhouse and am off plant sales for awhile (well at least until spring:~).

Your comment about your Brighamias being hardy for you caught my eye as I've wondered about their cold tolerance as I lug mine back into the greenhouse every year winter. What are your normal night time winter lows in your area? Ours can drop to 20 or 22 often when it is not raining or foggy. Are you keeping them drier over winter?

Normally low winter temps are in the high 20 to low 30s. I leave the Brighamia unprotected, frost doesn't seem to bother them. I water occasionally, but most the time they get whatever nature provides(except during the summer).

Thanks for the info Keith, most appreciated. I'm spending today trying to start moving plants in (no small task). Weather's been threatening to deliver an early frost. We saw 36 a couple of nights last week.

By the way Kelly Griffin Aloe (KG14 right?) is one of my absolute favorites. Great colors in or out of the sun and lovely flowers! I inquired about it a couple years back wondering about the cross and found that it has quite a few species and numerous back crosses in it's parentage. Truly unique mix!

Hasn't been below 50deg yet. Did a little moving today, spent about 2hrs making a shelter to protect some of my fatties from the rain. Have two more to cover tomorrow.

In the info you included it said you can grow the Brighamia from seed. That gives me hope to get my hands on one. I am on a quest now--I think they are just beautiful. Thanks for the pictures. I will keep checking to see the one you have ready to flower. Thanks again.

you haven't seen 50 yet? Could be that we are going to be to cold more often where I'm at for outside - maybe the hoop house. I might have to designate a guinea pig for this winter before leaving the whole bunch out.

Per chance are the Brighamia rockii in bud? I was told that the flowers are a different color that B. insignis but am wondering if "different" is just a lighter/darker shade of yellow. Been wondering.

Hey Jen, thanks! been trying to spend less time on the computer this year but I find myself drifting into the office more to visit the computer lately :~) Did you say "empty"? LOL! not a chance! Seems everything got big this year, it's been a good growing year for sure.

What do the D.gigas go for if you dont mind?. I have 14" plant that stays outdoors all year. Deciduous but takes real cold-32 with no damage. And i dont keep it out of the rain..just never water it myself in winter.
They Caudex, would really appreciate being in a grow out bed.Otherwise very slow to make size.

Be careful, last January during our cold spell down here near SD I lost all my four dormant D. gigas in the unheated greenhouse. 4 nights with down to between 24F and 27F was just too cold for them.
Surprisingly there was no damage to my two big D. gypsophila though.

A 4in pot 6in tall plant went for $15. Last I purchased 4 6in tall well established rooted cuttings for $24. The best deal they had on gigas was 4-5yrs ago, 8in pot 12in tall for $25! Bought six plants and used them for trading stock (like I did with the Dendrosicyos this year).

Last winter's 3 days of 19deg killed the growing tips of 3 of my gigas, one had no damage in an unheated shelter.

Next spring I'm going to try a gigas and Adenium obesum in the raised bed, will take before and end of season photos to compare growth of non-bedded plants.

I saw the rest of your pictures and could feel myself turn green with envy :)

I was browsing through your great pics, and came upon one that I need an ID of.

I got a similar plant at a recent swap, and I've been unable to ID it. The closest I've gotten is wavy-leaf soap plant, Chlorogalum pomeridianum. It's the one with the wavy leaves on the right of your pic. Please let me know if you have an ID on it -- thanks!

Yes, too many! and I sold off about 100 or so plants over the summer. Which would be fine if I didn't take the money and buy more.

You really have some great looking plants there, The plant sales I have been to around here sure don't have plants like that.
I tried to find your brighamia rockii. check into some seedlings but I could not find anyone that sells them. I did find one place that had seed. But not for sure at this late date that they still do. Maybe that is another reason it is good that I do not live out on the coast, I would be more broke then I am already. lol

want seeds from that Brighamia rockii! anyone know who has them or where to get them?
