OOH, good investigating Patty!Your collection is almost complete. Is there anything else you need besides the Ugli?

I think I'm done buying for a while, I think i talked myself out of the Lisbon and the Shamouti. I did however see a very cute Fremont at OSH yesterday that I am contemplating.

Yes, it is. Can't find an Ugli, and according the Luen from Monterey, he suggested skipping it, as it really doesn't do well unless it can have hot nights (like in Jamaica). So, I'm good for now!

Fortunately as a California resident, you can get Ugli budwood from the CCPP. On the other hand, being a California resident also can make it hard to get some varieties, as the large out of state citrus nurseries that grow some of the rare varieties like Ugli, aren't allowed ship into California.

Yup, was hoping I didn't have to resort to grafting, but looks like this would be my only option. I'm a CRFG member, so I have plenty of help with grafting if I need it. But, after having heard from several folks whose opinions I value, sounds like the Ugli may not perform at all for me, since my nights just are "Jamaican-like", lol! We're still pretty cool here in the evenings, even during a summer heat wave due to the ocean influence (I'm only about 6 miles from the ocean). So, I'll have to settle for my Ortanique, my Wikiwa and my new Chironja for my pommelo/grapefruit type hybrids.

Hey Patty,
I also picked up a Ponkan in May from a grower in Fla and am looking forward to the first blooms/fruit next year (might get a bloom or two early).
Can't wait to see your pics.

Help with grafting Patty? Heck, I can't even root cuttings as successfully as I would like too. I seem to have success with cuttings I leave in the pond and walk away from.lol

How are you? Did you get your newbies yet? I can't wait to see them Patty.
It is hellish up here and nothing to do but to have fun on these forum..lol

Thanks, Tim! We'll have to swap photos of our Ponkans as they grow. I think Karly might have also snagged a Ponkan, Karly, did you pick one up?? What did you end up with for your additional trees? I'll snap some pics of my new trees - Ponkan, Mato Buntan and bigger Ortanique and post them today. They all have fruit set, so I should have fruit next year. Expecting the additional citrus to arrive next week, and I'll get them in the ground and then add those photos.

Mike, glad to see you have not blown or floated away! Were you able to get your precious trees inside? And grafting isn't so hard, you could learn to do it. There are folks that really love to make their own fruit trees. I tend to be a little too impatient to wait 4 or 5 years for fruit, so I am glad to be able to find some of the more unusual citrus available from a variety of growers here in Calif.

I was almost picked up by wind myself since I only weigh a measly 140 pounds, all muscle though.lol

I never did get my trees inside. i heard so many conflicting stories on the wind speed that I chanced it. I figured it would of been days before anyone could of came around and help me put them back out:-(
I did have many protected by the wall of my barn house and teh wind was coming from in front of it cutting the wind by half.

A few exposed ones did tip over and one was lying flat on the ground still in pot. I should of left it there, when I lifted it back up again, another gust came along and that time knocked it right out of the pot. Dir.lol

Thanks for the confidence in grafting. I would LOVE to lear someday although like you, I would much rather get one already growing for quite some time.

I can only imagine what you learn and teach where you are. I would love to hang with you for an afternoon:-)

Yikes, Mike! You and I weigh the same. More determined than ever to get this 20 lbs. off, lol!! Glad your trees survived, and only minimal damage was experienced. And glad your dad is doing well, looking forward to his avocado photos!

And, I have my first container citrus :-) I was a little concerned about the small Ortanique I bought. Just not greening up like it should have, plus the pot it came in from the nursery seemed too heavy to me after watering, which to me means too much water retention, so I decided to repot it yesterday. Good thing I did. The soil had a definite anaerobic smell (i.e., it stunk). And, most of the soil fell away from the rootball, so not good root formation. I very carefully removed as much soil as I dared, and repotted in EB Stone Cactus Mix. I have it on my east facing patio, so it will get afteroon shade, which is good right now, since it's been in the high 80's to low 90's.

You can see tiny new flush, plus teeny tiny buds at the end of the branches. So, hoping it will green up for me after the roots recover. will fertilize it with 1/2 strength Foliage Pro in a week or two.

I'll bet that tree will green up faster than you think in your hands! If it was able to speak, it would thank you for a much better mix and a new home among all the other healthy trees.

It will bet staring out all the other big boys and girls and will want to go out and play too in no time. It sounds like you did a great job and know exactly what it needs to be content. I love it. It is always fun to see a once needy tree come much more a live with a little effort, isn't it?

I tend to buy a sickly tree and take in those needing help once in a while just to experience the feeling of satisfaction of their much healthier look!

Thanks, Mike. I am crossing my fingers I didn't shock the heck out of it. We'll see. We're in for cooler weather next week, so hopefully it will continue to perk up. And sound like a perfect excuse to me to pay your dad a little visit, and drag your camera along, too!!
