Cool Citrus Additions

I'm really excited about some new additions to my citrus collection. I will be adding an Ugli Tangor (that was the Holy Grail), an Ortanique Tangelo, a Nova mandarin and a Tango mandarin. And, my Wekiwa Tangelolo looks like it's going to havea boatload of fruit, so I'm going to actually have to thin it, if it doesn't drop more fruit. I'm really excited about the Wekiwa. I know it doesn't always have good flavor in other parts of the country (Dr. Manners says it tastes pretty awfully terrible in Florida where he hails from), but here in San Diego county, it is quite good. And, since I love grapefruit, especially grapefruit or pummelo hybrids, I was thrilled to find one. So, next year, I'll have my first fruits from it. I'll snap some photos when my new trees arrive. They may be pretty tiny - I'll probably have to graft at least one - but neat to be able to get some more unusual varieties!

I can't wait to taste my wekiwa either. Last year I bought a 7 gallon that was LOADED with fruit, but once I brought it home I removed the tape holding the stake and the trunk split right down the middle. There were carpenter ants inside the trunk. I brought it back and got a refund, but about a week later I picked up one of the fruits that had dropped and was sitting in the back of my truck; it tasted pretty amazing.

Yes, they will survive. As long as temperatures are consistently below about 50F (but above freezing) citrus goes into 'hibernation' with no root or leaf activity. There must be no warm spells or significant light. I saw this method used in a French chateau which was in a region with considerable frost and snow. They moved their very large potted citrus trees into the basement 'dungeon' for four months of winter. They were brought out again in spring, having suffered just a little leaf drop, and soon burst into new growth.

What is location? So I understand this garage room has no heat or AC? What size is this room? Room is used regularly? When room was converted, any special insulation improvements made to make room comfortable and liveable? Mini split HP certainly is a possibility but it won't be cheap. Before I even considered that option, I would want a load calculation made for your home and also determine if your existing heating system has the extra capacity to heat the converted room and if that's even feasible economically. Do I understand you have a 2 ton AC condenser serving your home less the converted garage room? IMO

Pip Yes To date I have yet to get anything other than PT or Kuharske to root. I am currently working on sweetlee Tangerines. The cutting above is the second of 7 rooting cuttings to fail so I hydrated it and grafted it to Kuharske. If 2 or more of my US897/lemonade trees works I'll send you one as long as I have one for my self.

Hi guys, it is cold out and hibernation is the only way :) we did not have sunshine for almost 10 days, overcast and dark, short days. Yesterday and today there was some sunshine. The trees by the windows are not growing, I think they are taking a break, the small grafted ones under lights are putting out few leaves at a time. Summer is so far away!
