I am no expert, but Picea Glauca densata may be (never saw one, but it looks like a dense Picea Glauca hehe). Cones look like Picea glauca too. And you live int he US. So I'd say P. glauca densata.

I think this little guy will get a lot bigger in the next few years.

BTW: it already has cones?! Wow..

Definitely Picea glauca from the cone. Are the shoots hairless, or finely hairy?

I have a P. glauca densata that's about 5 years old--it's the only one I'm familiar with, so we're dealing with a sample size of 1, but it seems related but different. Or maybe it's just normal variation. My new tree has much shorter needles--about 6-7mm vs ~ 13mm for my P. glauca densata. The color is quite different (the densata is not at all blue), and the habit also seems different--my older tree is very dense, and growth is emphatically upright. This new little guy almost seems like he's thinking about weeping a bit, and is more open. Again, naturual variation? Different in age? Conifers are still new to me.

reminds me a lot of my Picea glauca 'Caerulea' ... though it is always hard to compare color online ...

it may help when it buds out ...

growth rates look about comparable ....

I have a better idea of where to site it in the yard now. Time to pull out another rose bush and put in another conifer!

if you further googled it.. well ... i agree.. blue is one of the most abused colors in plant catalogs [and consequently online] .... i cant even count how many plants.. over the years.. that i bought from a catalog.. that claimed to have 'blue' flowers.. only to feel ripped off .... when seeing it in person ....

Probably just natural variation, compounded by root restriction in the pot (tends to make needles shorter).

No hair = typical Picea glauca var. glauca or var. densata; excludes var. albertiana.

Well, my Picea glauca var "whosis" (probably densata, and I'm not jumping into the middle of anything more specific!) is happily in the ground in a place with room to grow. We were able to site it with a "Forest Pansy" redbud and a red-leafed Japanese maple as companions, which ought to really bring out the blue. Thanks again--we had no idea what to plan for as far as mature size, so all your comments were very helpful.

the dormant leader on your plant is the MINIMUM annual growth rate of your plant ...

it might slow down due to the transplant ....

but it looks to me.. without a scale ... to be a minimum of 8 to 12 inches per year.. and it might be more than that in a few years.. when it really gets going ...

Ken, 'Coerulea' is the true Latin name for your plant and this has something to do with it's blue colour.
This doesn't have nothing to do with a foreign name.
Latin names are worldwide the same.
'Caerulea' is just a misspelling...

Well, this is fun! The new grow is starting, and it's RED! Looks like little strawberries on the ends of the branches. It will be interesting to see if the color holds while the buds continue to develop.

Pollen cones. The red won't hold after the pollen is released (they'll turn yellow-brown and then drop off), and also won't hold for foliage buds.
