Cweathersby - Spider!!

Hey Carrie,

I think your spider followed me home, look what I found today in my yard!! Luckily, he is located at a place where DH can't see him, otherwise, he is dead meat, DH is pretty lethal with his Raid.

Looks a lot like a Garden Spider to me, here they're called "Writing spiders" (No, don't ask me why- I've never heard the explanation). I make sure to leave them alone and their egg sacs too- I want them to eat up all the bad bugs in my garden. Very nice pic. Brandy

Patricia, Glorie de Dijon - Died this winter. 3 years old. Was in too much shade, but I had read that this was a rose that could tolerate some shade. It never was a strong rose, but I wasn't expecting it to die. Beautiful blooms. I want another one of these. Love that fleshy color. Rev d Or - Lived for 2 years. Grew by leaps and bounds, then one spring it leafed out and then died before blooming. I look at my roses often and the death was very sudden. One day it looked bad, within a couple of days after that it was dead. I think this happened last spring. Bouquet d Or - Bought from ARE, so it was a 2 or 3 gallon rose. I think it was bought and planted in the early fall. It didn't grow much and was dead within a year (maybe a half a year). This was 2 or 3 years ago. I also lost Sombruil the climber. It lived for 3 years then started dying back this past winter. I kind of thought it would come back from the ground this year, but no such luck. I hope this helps. I've lost some HTs to the creeping die back crud, but some of these OGRs were kind of sudden. I've got other noisettes in the same area: Jaune Desprez, MAC, and others whose names I can't remember, but they are all very much alive. .... so far.

I have the large loropetalum and it blooms in winter, spring, summer and fall. I love that plant. Good shape, not invasive, nice foliage and beautiful flowers. J. C.Raulston brought it from China and recommended it for the southeast. Mock orange is done in a week and a lot of varieties aren't even fragrant. Plumbago (Cape Wort) maybe or may not be hardy in zone 7. I had one for many years coming back and this year it didn't though it was planted on the south side of the house protected but large rose bushes. Who knows? Worth trying though. Hardy Plumbago has darker blue flowers, foliage turns reddish in fall - it is either a ground cover or a small shrub. I love it. False Indigo (Baptisia australis) is an excellent shrub - the white flowering variety blooms way before the roses start blooming; stems come up like black asparagus. There is a blue and yellow blooming variety. I love to use the leaves in flower arrangements. Caryopteris - in various shades of blue; usually blooms late summer and fall. Foliage is gray but there is a new one that has chartreuse two-tone foliage; it is beautiful. This is the only pre-digital photo I found of our Pineapple Guava

I used to use soaker hoses. I had an extensive & intricate network of them running through the garden areas. I wasn't happy with the results and it was difficult for me to get the right amount of water on all the plants. I eventually pulled most of them up and went back to the overhead sprinkler. I find it much more simple and effective, since I don't have a lot of gardening time. I don't baby my roses at all, and I don't care if their leaves or blooms get wet. I also don't expect them to look perfect all the time. I treat them just like I treat the other plants. Some of them have reacted negatively to this treatment, such as Clotilde Soupert, Rise-N-Shine, Paul Neyron, and those will never be my favorite roses ... but the rest have thrived including some pleasant surprises like Souvenir de la Malmaison. You really got some good shots! That spider has doubled in size since y'all were here. It's doing a great job catching the insects in my garden. I'm glad you made it to Tyler. I've wanted Auguste Renoir ever since I saw it there last August. Thanks for the visit. I really enjoyed it. I live so far out in the boonies that it's rare that I get a chance for garden visitors. We have one of those on the walk to my dd's elementary school. It's a good 2" long so the kids walk by and check it out every morning and afternoon. It's very pretty!

Yes, I'm sure Mr/Ms Spider wants to eat up other bugs in the garden.

I don't know if I mentioned how much I love those spiders!
I always try to throw a bug into their web for them so that they will get fat and happy and have lots of babies so that maybe the grasshopper population around here will go down!
For those of you who have never done it, throw a bug on there and watch the spider's reaction. It's better than anything you'll ever see on TV.

I get those spiders in my yard. I didn't know they were banana spiders. They make an enormous web over my koi pond. I certainly do love spiders. I do have to be cautious around some areas because of the black widows. They're beautiful, but I've heard they can get you rather sick. FWIW the squiggly zig zag design in the middle of the web is caused a "stabilamentum" (sp?)... and, it's still uncertain as to why some spiders make them and others don't...I did a paper on this back in undergrad.

Sorry Lisa, that is not a Banana Spider...I have always heard them called 'Orb Spiders'

Melva, orb spiders are spiders that weave orb webs. It's a generic term that covers banana spiders (aka golden silk orb-weavers), the common garden spider, and thousands of other species.

The name "Writing Spider" must come from the squiggly band in the web. It does look sort of like lettering, but spiders don't use the Roman alphabet.

I know many don't like spiders, wasps, or preying mantises, but they are truly beneficial in the garden. They eat the grashoppers that devour my roses, leaves, and stems. Plus they are so cool looking!!

Msjam, I'll give the banana spider a home.

Carrie, what justice to see those rose destroyers getting the death they deserve.
