***Admittedly, a quick ID for me, as I jumped in & out of the forum. I should make a New Year's resolution not to DO that anymore. But then, I wasn't sure when I'd have a chance to get back!

Yes, obviously an epiphyte to cling to the wall like that. There's a joke in here somewhere about a little guy following you home to probably poke you one day, he's a little prick(ly) right? I regret not repotting the last Sans I brought home, FWIW. Going to start calling these soggy plants that would prefer to be dry "drunken plants." They need to dry out and kick the habit of getting soaked so often.

I'm not sure about the E. obesa. I have one very much like Laura's plant. Actually self sown seedlings, and they have never have the dimensions of my dearly departed obesa. The closest I can find on Frank's site (Euphorbia.de, Hybrid 2 in the "G" key of similarities) is a hybrid. I'll go take a pic of mine. I think it is an open pollinated E. anoplia seedling.

I am so hesitant to contra indicate the ID from the real experts above that I've waited 2 days to post. Two cups of strong coffee has overcome that, and I will likely live to regret it.

I had a Euphorbia William Denton hybrid a few years back that was a hybrid of E obesa and something else... looks just like your plant.

No, no ping. The important thing is to resign yourself to never having the exact name, indeed you want to resist the urge to have a 'correct name'. What you want is to cultivate the ability to enjoy the plants you have. If you get a named plant, great! Never separate the tag and the plant. And if you get an unnamed plant, you can get a general idea what the plant is for cultivation purposes, but just enjoy it for what it does.

BTW, we can agree that this is not an unnamed cactus. It is an unnamed Euphorbia, maybe a hybrid. Dogs and cats are both carnivorous mammals. Cactus and Euphorbias are both succulents. The analogy applies.

Dz, I absolutely agree about enjoying the plant. I have a ton of Thanksgiving cacti. There are so many varieties, I could never hope to figure out which ones I have. Red, yellow or white is fine by me!

I do know Euphorbias are NOT cacti. Total slip of the tongue. My parents have a gigantic one in their family room. They named it Uncle Cactus because he's been around so long he's part of the family. Not sure I could correct them at this point. Besides, Uncle Cactus knows his name.

Laura, Dz is one of the resident sages, but his complete infatuation with certain cactus genera does queer his pitch sometimes. Still, he's as lovable as a Deamia and twice as poetic.

And we don't hate them. Personally speaking, what I do dislike are the lazy ones (yours isn't), but like the masochist that I am, I keep coming back.

Uncle Cactus bit my dad a couple of months ago. He was repotted and my dad rubbed his eye. You know the story...his whole face swelled, his eyes swelled shut. Mom called and said she thought Uncle Cactus shot his quills into Dad's eyes. I'm like, ummmm, nope. Allergic reaction to the latex. Get to the ER. Mom threatened to put Uncle Cactus outside in the cold. Dad said it wasn't Uncle Cactus' fault. I don't think he'll be repotted probably again.

Ok, now you all know that I'm a total crackpot, as is my family.

Indeed, Mr. Harris. "Likeable as a Deamia"? Really? Deamias are like a mackerel in the moonlight. They shine AND stink. Since nobody has smell-o-vision yet, I'll assume the stink is not evident. Come Sunday morning, even the stink is gone. (Saturday night baths are all the rage, don't you know.)

Laura, I am not really an expert, a sage or anything in the same league as Jeff and Jordi, and I can't hold a candle to RoRo for IDs. Lots of posters on here are Agave experts, "salad" experts, succulent experts. I cannot claim any of those titles, but I like to learn from them. In fact I am a Maine farm boy relocated to warmer climates. (Z3 to Z6).

Just curious, and don't want to put you on the spot, but are there any cuttings showing any new growth at your house? You can ignore my query if you want, I don't wish to pry.

Actually, I've rooted several CC and TC cuttings lately. Not putting on growth, but they clearly have roots. Also a little kalanchoe tomentosa is growing from a leaf I rooted. Also, I have a little gollum jade started from a leaf a couple of months ago. Numerous AV have been started from leaf.

Once again you educate me - 'mackerel in the moonlight' are words I've never experienced before. D. testudo (Selenicereus testudo)'s flowers smell slightly fragrant to me - the three years in flower that my specimen experienced (can't find the picture of one year's magnificently-sized white flower, and, come to think of it, it was the night of it flowering and a full moon and and we had a full set of howlers) were cause enough for a garden party.

As the others have said, no...I enjoy identifying plants. Keeps my brain cells working. =) I think all remarks have been in fun. There are, on rare occasions, posters who are mean-spirited & say nasty things. But, for the most part, we like educating & being educated about all succulents!
So, no need to be paranoid, Laura, as we were all newbies at some time & can relate!

A hybrid E. obesa seems likely (as Jordi, Geoff & others indicated). Do you have any closer (clear) pix of the blooms (cyathia)?

Jeff: I thought it said Obesa Hybrid too but was ducking the pebbles as they went flying.

The pot has a porcelain fired finish in folk art theme some finish work is stamped/stenciling some free hand.
I'm Seeing an off white in color on bloom if that helps you RoRo and also gave thought to narrow down hybrid combos by seeking some good candidates as hybrid possibilities.

For both Obesa X ???? in prior pics it's nice to see the ribs came forward but wondering if the male female flowering characteristics of E. Obesa would carry forward or be lost by hybridizing.

My little guy has been freed from the nasty wet soil and planted in gritty mix. Hopefully with time he'll look really happy too. Thanks for all the replies. I got quite a laugh out of this thread.
