I live in the west perhaps things grow differently, mine did die after flowering. You are talking about Kalanchoe luciae. I never learned it by the name of 'Paddle Plant' pardon my ignorance. If the soil is good you may leave the babies in the same pot, if not repot every year, so they will have new nurishment. Norma

Yes, I left mine in a pot and all the suckers grew up around the dead center, and eventually covered it over and I could hardly tell anything had died there before. Paddle plant is the common name for Kalanchoe luciae alright, though 95% of the world still incorrectly calls it Kalanchoe thyrsiflora. It is also called Flapjacks plant, pancake plant etc.

I think it may go by 'Flapjacks' as well. The Huntington Gardens have been correcting this mistake the past 20 years. He posted the correction in the CSSA Journal. I posted the correction to several Journals as well. I sent the whole article through my photo duplicator I was able to send a whole page at once. I now seldom see the name 'Paddle Plant' even in the old cataloges any more. Norma

I have had my cluster growing for 5 years in the same pot , a van brake drum stacked on a column of brake rotors.. It bloomed and died back part way, sending out babies and then a year latter I had three babies bloom and I keep giving them away and weeding some out so they still have room to grow. I do need to put in some fresh soil.

If you leave it outside as long as possible so it can get some late fall/ winter sun, it will turn a beautiful red. Every year I chance a freeze since it will take a light one. This spring it got snowed on. It did not like that. It didn't like the hail the year before either. BUt it has forgiven me , over and over for the abuse that I give it. It loves the winter sun. It just occasionally looks like it gets acne from unwanted frozen precipitation.

FYI they really don't like going under salt water either.
