This stud colt was born on Monday' which was the Rancher's 55th birthday. I had no idea that, Jenny, the thuroughbred mare was even expecting. What a surprise! He is just beautiful!! In this pic he was about a half day old. His father, of course, is a Paint Stud named Tommy who belongs to my daughter. The rancher owns the mare. Jenny is about sixteen years and this is her first off spring.

Sadly, Old George, my daughters quarter horse is getting on in years and did not weather the winter well. We've been talking about putting him down for two years now but didn't want my daughter to freak out about it. Yesterday, she went to see the new colt. While there, she asked the Rancher to put down old George. He told her he was just waiting for her to ask. A sign of her maturity now. She learned to ride on Old George, I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision for her but I am proud of her. Full circle.

You're right, MeMo, he IS just beautiful. Talk about being all legs! His legs aren't much shorter than his mom's.

Good-bye to Old George. Maybe the colt will be New George. :-)

Oh Memo! You and Rancher are sooo blessed! What a beautiful baby horse and what a wonderful gift/surprise! And kudos to your daughter for letting George go - another gift, and as you said, full circle.

Hi Fergus - my name is Ozzie, or at least that's what my new Mum calls me. She is off doing some silly human thing, so I am trying this keyboard thing out. She gets mad when I try to put my opinion in when she's here, so now I have me chance!! Do you like cuddling? I do, especially when Mum cuddles me to her chest and I can feel her heart beat. It's too slow and I worry about her, but she comes home with such amazing food, it must be because she's tired. Do you like to chase leafs?? I love to do that....also to climb trees and fences.....spring is so much fun....I am so glad Mum and Midnight and Nici and Syl moved into my house. The other people and cats didn't let me come in, or share their food. Syl is very old, but lets me curl up with her; Midnight doesn't like me much at all, but Nici is my best bud!!! He is teaching me about living inside, and how to be on my best behaviour. I'm not good at that yet... but am trying very hard - maybe we could have a play-date??? I/ve heard that's what they do in polite society. I'll send you a photo soon....your in kittenhood, Ozzie.

Where did you say your brother lives? Looks like plants grown in the southwest or Arizona perhaps? The one reminds me of dasylirion perhaps and one I'd increasingly be interested in trying to grow indoors here in Michigan. Very wonderful plants I'd say, and a wonderful brother as well!! I did find one very nice web site a couple of years ago , or at least it seemed so, that featured their field grown and large specimens of various yuccas, agaves, and dasylirions, but upon sending e-mails there was never any answer, and perhaps that company had gone out of business. Very disappointing that, and I'm still looking to find a nice Agave parryi somewhere, and thats' a somewhat rare one I guess?

Glad to hear the good news. I totally get the heart-stopping feeling. When my now 4 1/2 year old twin grandsons were born at 36 weeks, one spent 1 week in the NICU then another week in the step-down unit. The other twin had blood and bilirubin issues and spent 2 weeks in the NICU, where they performed a total blood transfusion at 8 days old, then 2 weeks in the step-down and then we spent the next year running back and forth to hematologists and pulmonologists. The poor baby was a pincushion. Thank goodness that's behind us and they're both getting ready to start kindergarten this fall. Helene

Oh my gosh, he is adorable! My youngest little guy, Lucky, is going to be three in June. They are so cute at that age :)

Your daughter did a very brave thing, to put the needs of Old George before her own.

How did I miss this? That is a gorgeous colt! Such a lovely photo.
Do you remember in an old Walt Disney movie how bambi scrambled on the ice? That's what those colt legs remind me of! WOBBLE WOBBLE!

He is just lovely! Congratulations. And I'm sorry for Old George. We all have to go sometime but it's a hard thing when we have to make the decisions for those who can't.

Thank you everyone. The day we took these photos, the day he was born, his mother got very nervous, because we had entered the pasture, and began to run. The little colt stayed right beside her but he leaned from side to side trying to stay afoot. I was so worried that he would fall. He did look like that image of Bambi in the old movie, Glynis! The Rancher says he is doing wonderfully and getting around very sure footed now. I was out at the ranch this past weekend but there wasn't enough time for me to wander down to the pasture to look in on him. Maybe next time. I should have a few new calves next month!
