You're welcome! It's not odd that cooler zones will report more fragrance from many than warmer areas. Those in the cooler places are probably smelling them when the oils and alcohols are most volatile and smell the most. We in the warmer areas often miss out because they evaporate faster as the heat increases. Also, as aridity increases, the scents burn out faster. The various components of each rose's fragrance evaporate at different rates, so one may smell very Damask at first, quickly morphing into orris or citrus, finishing a completely different scent before losing any detectable trace for the day. What fun to see all these! Of the new introductions, I think the hybrid rugosa 'Wild Spice' rates a mention! I once had a hedge of Rosarie de l'Hay, one of my earliest to bloom, and it also had a glorious clove-spiked fragrance. Most rugosas share a unique quality to their scent. Glad to see 'Parole' on the list--a Kordes also sold as Buxom Beauty, a rose which leaped onto my wish list the first I heard of it!

How close are they? The problem is if you planted them too close the roots will be intertwined, it may mean disturing all of them to get the Rouge Cardinal out of there. It may be better to leave them alone. Also mulching and shading the roots may help the Hagley if the wilting is from the soil drying out. Give the white a little more time, if it's Huldine it can be a little reluctant to bloom but could be well worth it in the long run.

The Horticultural Society has some wonderful pocket-sized books on clematis, I thought I would share some of their info. I bought this 10 years ago, so the names are from what was available then. I'll post for each group. I hope your lovely vines benefit from the info. I learn something new each time I pick up the book and apply it to one of my pretties. This group consists of all the species and large-flowering clematis that bloom from mid to late summer, in which the stems grow and bloom in the same season. Many, like herbaceous and texensis, die back during winter. They can be hard prunded in later winter or early spring every year, cutting back all stems to within 12 in/ 30cm of the ground. Prune as growth starts so that you can cut stems back to good buds 1 Remove any dead growth (no buds are visibly breaking). Be careful not to damage any new shoots coing from the base. 2 Cut back remaining stems just above a pair of healthy buds 6-12 inc/ 15-30 cm above ground level. Make a straight cut across the stem.
