Horticultural Society Group 3

The Horticultural Society has some wonderful pocket-sized books on clematis, I thought I would share some of their info. I bought this 10 years ago, so the names are from what was available then. I'll post for each group. I hope your lovely vines benefit from the info. I learn something new each time I pick up the book and apply it to one of my pretties.

This group consists of all the species and large-flowering clematis that bloom from mid to late summer, in which the stems grow and bloom in the same season. Many, like herbaceous and texensis, die back during winter. They can be hard prunded in later winter or early spring every year, cutting back all stems to within 12 in/ 30cm of the ground. Prune as growth starts so that you can cut stems back to good buds

1 Remove any dead growth (no buds are visibly breaking). Be careful not to damage any new shoots coing from the base.

2 Cut back remaining stems just above a pair of healthy buds 6-12 inc/ 15-30 cm above ground level. Make a straight cut across the stem.

I really enjoy being a member of the American Horticultural Society. I find the magazine most helpful in articles which describe in some detail many varieties of a particular plant. I also enjoy articles that deal with some particular problem that I have--Gardening on a Slope, Curbside Gardens etc. Most of all I like to be part of what AHS does besides the magazine. I participate in the annual AHS seed exchange. I join on-line AHS Webinars on useful subjects. I use my AHS member card for free or reduced fee admission to some public gardens. I'm glad that through AHS membership I can give a little financial support for the Gardens at Riverbend, the internships for horticultural students, the awards given to worthy individuals and groups in the horticultural world. Haven't decided yet whether I can afford continuing Fine Gardening for its "smaltzy photos". My daughter gave it to me last year but now the local library also subscribes to FG and Horticulture. Membership fees are extremely reasonable - often under $20 for a year. A few benefits of the Mount Forest Horticultural Society, one of the societies I belong to- -great speakers -incredible potluck dinners -friendship -local information about garden centres, plants, perennials, great gardens, hardiness etc. -experience- there are some incredible gardeners who belong -discounts at local nurseries -bus tours - expeditions with the hort society usually costs less than if I went by myself -prizes at every meeting -belonging to a community of gardeners Plus, the horticultural societies usually use the membership dues and other fees to get great speakers and to beautify the town. Joining the hort society is sometimes a way of expanding your own gardening experience and area. Imagine driving into your beautiful town and knowing you helped make it beautiful! For me, the problem is only choice and time. My local towns of Harriston and Clifford also have fantastic hort societies. One last benefit- some of the members are elderly and do not possess computer skills. But their depth of knowledge is extraordinary. I'd join for them alone. Go for it. You'll like it.

Six weeks to 2 months?? That's our whole growing season!! LOL Not quite...but my group C clematis are in bud and I don't expect blooms for another couple of weeks. The average first frost in my area is Sept. 15 (last frost in spring is usually May 24 or so--we don't plant tender annuals until after June 1). Although most perennials survive the first few light frosts, it's too cold for rebloom. And, as I previously mentioned, plants need to start hardening off for winter survival. Don't feel too sorry for us, though. Because of our hot days and cool nights, flowers bloom in brighter colours, vegetables are sweeter, and it's easier to fall asleep at night! Because of our short growing season and long, cold winters, we have far fewer garden pests and diseases to deal with. And, because of our longer days, things seem to grow right before your eyes. Don't think it's all bleakness until June 1. The first perennials in my yard (hepaticas) start to bloom in early April. If it's a nice, long spring, the bulbs (tulips, daffodils, squills, fritillarias, etc.) are glorious for many weeks. There are lots of flowering shrubs and trees that can take some frost and snow. Every climate and location has its challenges and rewards. There are some breathtakingly beautiful gardens in my city (mine is still a work-in-progress).

Oh, wow. That's a lot of money for three plants, even for very nice ones! I'm sure the horticultural society will be able to do some great stuff with this money you made for them! This is pretty cool of you. I'm curious if there were a lot of orchids sold at that auction. Somehow orchids make people willing to spend a lot of money :-D . I once saw an orchid seller's booth at a show, and besides orchids, they were selling some very small sinningia leucotricias and a few common haworthias -- for about $50 per plant. Now, I don't think anyone else sold leucotrichas there, so there I could sort of see where the high price was coming from, but the same exact haworthias (I checked the tags, they really were the same!) were sold in a cactus booth for 5-6 dollars! So yeah, my theory is, orchids make people do crazy things. Were there any orchids at your auction? :) Of course, in reality, most likely people were simply being generous, since they knew they were benefiting the society. But I still like my orchid theory :) Oh, and 'Five and Dime' is a very pretty begonia, I saw it once and it's on my "I wanna" list :)
