Cactus and Succulent Society of MA Show (lotsa) Pics

Hi -

Thought I would post a few pics from last weekend's show up here in MA...the last picture is my humble acquisition, an Agave victoriae-reginae. With all the temptation, I was so proud that I was able to walk out with only one plant! Enjoy!

Is that Euphorbia globosa? I wish I had enough light to grow mine properly. It's sort of been a vine since I got it.

Dave, I'm sure the Society would like you as a member and a vendor - there's certainly a place for someone selling succulent-garden starter plants that are grown well and bug-free. It's interesting that you also are growing Cistanthe guadalupensis - that's a great plant for the SouCal growing area and is underrepresented in San Diego gardens (Bonus! - Cistanthe-member plants are commonly known as 'pussypaws'). Coincidentally enough, there was a show last night on folks who dive with sharks - one of the best places to see great white sharks is off Guadalupe Island, which is where C.g. comes from (it and a few islets). They were diving from a boat, so my posting here is coming full-circle with your most-recent picture. Speaking of pictures, if you're judiciously posting off-topic pics (and large ones at that), you might want to put just a thumbnail up in the post, rather than the whole picture. Some folks here are on dial-up.

Hi again. I finally got to see all those wonderful plants! Pijaya, thanks for posting those links! I do have a question, though, for anyone who knows: Can anyone tell me what the plant is in post #31 on the second link, page 4? It's the one with the giant caudex that looks like bread dough, with just a few vines poking out of it. It has an ID stick, but I can't quite make out what it says. This is a GORGEOUS plant! I NEED to know what it is!!! : ) Thanks for any help! Kate

Being a generalist collector of all types of plant(although I'm positive i dont, and wont ever have, a rep of every type of plant)My years of seeing and buying...I think my favorite succulent is ..Euphorbia ammak variegata. There is NOTHING else like it than can be grown here in the bay area outdoors. There are no other(Oreocereus take decades) huge white cactids.Plus,it's fast,easy plant, and takes high 20's. Finally,it looks great. Pachypodium lamerii gives it competition-but isn't nearly as hardy,or even approaches the size of ammak outdoors. Beaucarnea recurvata...is great,but let's face it,when grown outdoors to most people, it's another Yucca-lol. Everybody notices E.ammak. Cactus?..Golden barrel...hands down. The great Pasacana's in a dream way(20-60' tall)but not likely to get past the height of a basketball hoop in your lifetime. And my little purple dwarf Opuntia 'santa rita" give so much while asking for so little. Like a good puppy. Good also are some very blue cereus on the market nowadays. A neighbor down the block had one reach a good 8-10' and wide in about 10 years..they cut it down for one of those cheap plastic sheds. Nothing rare mentioned-sorry. But,take the plants mentioned and place together and you will have a very flashy,colorful and easy to keep dry garden. Try 'em. btw,I cleared the mess under my old Ponytail and can now post some photos later of the base. And also,I noticed the very smooth branches. Aloe like.

Thanks for the well wishes! I started out with 16 possible entries a couple of months ago, last night I made the final decision on the top ten. They're all nice but the ones I selected are my favorites and IMHO are the best of the best. There's at least one that will wow the judges. For the average grower it is not a big production, but for me the being so anal about the presentation and the headache of making a pot to match the plant it is fairly involved. Most of the specimens I'm taking have to be prepared months in advance, taking them from growing pots or bed to show containers, root pruning or downright removal. There's one plant I cut in half to fit into the pot and still look balanced. Another was plucked from the ground 5:00 this morning and staged before I went to work. There's only two that I did nothing to, since I want them to grow slow I just leave them in the show pots year round. Then there's transportation. If it was just across town it would be a piece of cake, but a 6hr drive takes some preparation. Each plant has to be anchored to the pot so it doesn't vibrate out and topple over. Then the smaller plants need to boxed in such a way so they don't dump from going around a corner. On one plant the stems are so fragile that I put netting around so they don't snap from the bumpy ride. Another plant that didn't make the cut

Very nice plants, indeed! Does anyone know if they have this sort of thing around Pittsburgh, PA? I did a quick search and only came up with one hit for a group with 10 members. It would be fun to see a nice showing of beautiful plants. They have active orchid and bonsai societies, but no clue about cactus/succulent :o) Dan

Tom! Great pictures!

I took so many last year, that it never occurred to me to take close-ups like that. Wonderful job and it was so nice to finally meet you. I see you took a VERY nice one home with you. I love it!

Always amazes me the number of strategies plants utilize to grow in their respective habitats (as well as to avoid being eaten).
