Hah. I like that picture of me standing on the rock. I was showing Edwin the difference between the leaf structure of Sequoia sempervirens 'Adpressa' vs 'Albospica.' There's a lot of discussion as to whether they are the same plant or not. I think we agreed that they are, in fact, two different cultivars.

That is the most giant 'Gold Dust' I have ever seen. How long have you had that, Dave, and where did you get it?

I began work on Glacier's End in Summer of 2000. None of what you see on the grounds has been in place for more than 12 years. Most of what I buy is in a modest 1-2 gallon size, mostly because I don't have deep enough pockets for the instant gratification stuff, and I've also found that over a 5-7 year period, the smaller stuff will usually surpass the B&B material with extra vigor.

I picked up my 'Gold Dust' as a typical 3rd or 4th year graft from Coenosium Gardens about 8 years ago. Even though it grows slowly, it does, in fact grow noticeably. It's one of my all-time favorite spruces.

@all, I'll be sure to post more pics in the Spring. (but not so much that I'll blow bandwidth or get banned. LOL to Ken and Will).

i started with basically horse pasture ... what was it before you started .... a total blank canvas???? in your own post.. could you give us a before and after pic... i cant because no digital camera back then ... i will have to browse the hard drive ... this might be an interesting concept ...

the rock pic also reminded me of church .. especially the slight bow by joy ... and the two handed reach of the pastor of GEnd ....

i might consider killing for Calocedrus decurrens 'Maupin Glow' .. but i bet it wouldnt last long in my z5 ... so why bother ... lol ... especially since you are a pastor [of sorts]...

I looked around back GW posts, because I was certain that I posted the history of Glacier's End last summer. Maybe I just meant to and never got around to it.

My property was a Douglas Fir forest before a developer came in and stripped every bit of life from the land and put up a housing tract.

Another guy had the house for a few years before I bought it. "Chemical Ali" was all about the lawn with all the weed-n-feed and other poisons required to grow grass (the non-smokeable kind). I actually was witness to birds and critters banking u-turns at the property line in response to the chemicals. My intent is to restore life with organic landscaping and weird conifers.

one of my favorite past times used to be a hockey game in the background ... GO WINGS .. and a bunch of catalogs laying around the recliner ... and those were expensive hockey games.. lol ...

@Ken, old hippie is probably closer to reality. LOL. The golden pine in the last pic is Pinus parviflora 'Goldilocks,' although I think we're supposed to be calling it, 'Tansu Kazu' now.

Indeed, it was a very nice afternoon at Glaciers End!
We visited this place at the right moment because of the nice weather and taking pics, about 2 weeks later it was only white we would see because of the snow and ice chrystals...(see link)

Some comments to the pics:
Dave mentioned that he will cut off one leader of the Abies procera 'Rat Tail' in Spring.
'Rat Tail' is often seen as only 'Rat' but it's clear that this cultivar is named after it's tail and not the animal itself...

Calocedrus decurrens 'Maupin Glow'
When we were at Jason Hupp's nursery he told us that this one was found in Maupin which is a small town which is also in the Oregon State.

Picea mariana 'Blue Teardrop'
This one was found by Bob Fincham as a faster growing mutation on a Picea mariana 'Nana'.
Somethimes you see it also under the wrong spellend cultivar names 'Blue Tierdrop' and 'Blue Tear Drop'...

Picea abies 'Gold Dust'
This is a big specimen indeed, but we saw a much bigger one which was at least 4 times as big at Don Howse from Porterhowse Nursery.
'Gold Dust' was found 30 years ago between understock seedlings by Talon Buchholz and I guess that Don's specimen was one of the first propagations...

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Drath Hexe'.
This cultivar was found as a witches' broom on a 'Drath'.
All nurseries are selling those as cultivars of Chamaecyparis obtusa but it was me who discovered that those are cultivars of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana because of the cones that the 'Drath' will produce.
'Drath Hexe' was found by in 1990 my German friend Guenter Eschrich.

@ Sam, pizza, girls and conifers is the most ideal situation you can wish for.

@ Josh, unfortunately our photo camaras were left in the car but I bet Dave will go back there and will make a nice pic of her.
He's a regular customer of that bar (I guess I know why now) and the only thing he has to tell her is that this pic will make her famous all around the (conifer) world.

Henk, that is a gorgeous, huge Picea abies 'Gold Dust'. I really like how narrow this one is and that light gold coloring sure must make that plant stand out in ones gardens. That would look gorgeous by my pond. LOL Thanks for posting the photo.

the best way to illustrate the difference between Sequoia sempervirens 'Adpressa' and 'Albospica' is to show them side-by-side.

On the left is 'Adpressa.' On the right is 'Albospica.' Adpressa has smaller needles that are held closer to the stem (adpressed), while Albospica's needles more closely resemble a normal Sequoia sempervirens.

The plants are a bit different as well, although they both respond well to the same culture. Adpressa is a slower-growing tree, while Albospica can get large and rangy quite quickly. Both cultivars, however respond quite well to copicing when they start getting out of control.

I saw a lot of Adpressas which have needles like your Albospica. Maybe there is some confusion in Europe. Good you have both plants together, so it's easier to compare.
