Blooms encouraged by cool weather - Photos

After a LONG, DRY, GRUELING summer (which made the brug drop every flower bud it produced), the cool weather brought on a flush a growth and blooms. I took these photos this week. This is just one season's growth, as it froze to the ground this past january during an arctic blast that lasted for a week (temps in the 20s - rare for us in central CA).

Very, very pretty! Dittos what Threas said. It's wonderful to see something in bloom when some of us have 19 degrees outside. (grin)

Not trying to get into the wintersow vs. not wintersow debate here but....... The only time it makes sense to wintersow is when you are sowing seeds needing cold stratification and I know some of the ones you listed do not need it. I sowed the Asceplsis incarnata in early August and plan to put them in the ground under mulch all winter. I am winter sowing some native shrub seeds needing a couple months of cold strat. in pots outdoors and three others that are perennials that specifically need it. There are no hard fast rules to this. To each his own. I rather enjoy sowing indoors in winter and have had very good results and it gives me an uplift in winter to do that. I have had good head starts on healthy plants this way and have sowed many SW shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, cactus, etc. I always have something indoors in winter I am sowing. I usually start them in October or November in a large sunny S. exposure window and grow them very cool in the coldest dark months sort of in a wait pattern, then let them get warm again in late Feb when the sun comes stronger. I use lights sometimes if necessary but usually they just sit there in the cold. I am not a wintersower to the degree popularized to a hobby level of lots of containers with holes, lids etc craze with every seed I get being done that way. I just use regular pots in the shade under the carport for the seeds specifically needing a cold period. For penstemons its good, they come up when its still very cold. Some seeds needing cold I direct sow. Sometimes I experiment and try all different ways to see what does best with a backup supply to resow in spring. Look up your different varieties and see what they need and go from there. I have sowed seeds as early as October and had established plugs to put into the ground come spring. Other times I put the late summer sown seedlings in the ground in late fall and cover them with leaf mulch and had good well rooted starts that way in spring. Look at nature, she does that all the time with seeds that have fallen. Mostly, make it fun for yourself and do what you want. Save extra seeds for insurance, or try multiple ways and experiment. Do a test in a damp paper towel with a few seeds to see if they sprout in a few days. Often that will tell you want you need to know.

Thank you everyone for such nice compliments :) I am sure everyone will be having a plumie bonanza this summer. When the heat and sun gets really going next month I am sure there will be tons of other varieties blooming. BeachP, OMG @ 6:00am? Amazing!! I am not a heat person. In college I lived in Woodland Hills, it would get temps of 114 during the day in summer then drop to maybe 90 or so at night... I can only imagine your electric bill. Thanks again everyone Cheers

Cooler weather encourages less intense color

Im a bit north of you, and I am also noticing alot less intense colors (but the colors werent too intense to begin with because it started blooming when the weather was cooler). Temps here are in the mid to upper 50s at night now and in the low to mid 70s (some upper 70s some mid 60s) during the day. The flower size was much smaller too when we got hit by that coastal storm (which eventually knocked all the flowers off my plumie in the high winds), but we got a short lived warm up into the low 80s that made the flowers opening on those days much nicer. Also the inflo. on my pretty princess is not budging at all. It didnt drop off though so thats a good sign, but Im still not expecting any flowers (but I might bring it in early so it can stay warm enough to get some flowers on it). Unfortunately summer has come to a end, and I definately think my plumerias are one of the first to be effected by this early fall weather. My coconut palm isnt too happy either, and my cannas are completely unfazed. good luck, at least you can look forward to even more blooms and taller plants next year.

Very nice, central calif!!! Hopefully I would have something like that next year!! Brrrr,,, it is 32 degrees right now, nice to see one that is blooming.

Beautiful brugs! We are past chilly. It's downright COLD here now, in the 20's with a strong wind. Boy do I hate this.

Oh, that is very pretty. I love orange. I ordered an orange one from ebay last night. I need to block that site from my computer or nobody is gonna get anything for Christmas except for me, lol. Or they will open their box and say what is this stick? Oh, aren't you lucky that is a brug cutting and will grow into a beautiful plant but if you don't want it I'll take it back..... snatch.... LOL>

Here is my one thats blooming size. She's only about 6 months old so I hope she gets nice and big next year. This is the biggest flush so far. Has 7 flowers and just dropped 2 others.

All the Z8s and less. I feel your pain. I checked temps North and East. Chilly..... I spent all day sweating and planting. Z9 does have its benefits and the winter time is it. Summer we wish we were up north. Brrrrrrrrr I would spend a $ 1,000.00 a week on ebay if I was shut in. I get cabin fever real fast. Beautiful pics. Mine flush and then get hit by the wind.
