P. strobus Broom in my grandfather's backyard

Is this a broom worth investigating? What is the best way to go about tracking down someone who might make use of it? I asked my local conifer source and he doesn't do propagation. If anyone thinks this broom is worth looking at, I'll make some phone calls to nurseries in the area, but I thought I'd see what you all thought about it's chances of being interesting. The broom is about 12 feet off the ground.

Hi Lisa,

I can graft that broom for you. If nothing else it may be a nice piece of nostaglia for you and your grandfather. You can either send the scions directly to me or I can give you the mailing address to a couple friends of mine. I am coming down to the States next week to pick up some grafting wood. I can bring the grafted plants back next June when I go to the Conifer Society meeting in Iowa.

Do you live in Illinois or Iowa?

Two things jump out here. First, the white pine's branch habit, which is unlike anything I've seen in the species. Western white pine sometimes gets almost as compressed and smooth-margined as these branch complexes, but in strobus that is truly unusual. Second, the forest scene shows very rapid erosion. None of those roots grew out in the open air, so the depth of root exposed here and the ages of the trees can give you a good idea of the rate of soil loss. Nice pics.

Hi Ian ( I presume, according to your blog) That's a nice guide on how to grow P. strobus. The pictures of the different stages of the seedling are very informative. I think that you misunderstand the meaning of cultivars. They're are all Pinus strobus (Pinus strobus is a white pine), just like yours, however, most of those posted here are a special cultivar, which are slightly different from the one you have (which I presume is a regular forest species). Crappy Backyard Challenge!

OMGosh!! I was so pleasantly surprised to see such great responses to my challenge! And I'm seriously not offended by any comments...it is a crappy backyard that has been NEGlected!!! for many years. Only our wolf shep goes back there and that's when it doesn't rain (she's a prissy dog). I love all the suggestions and I will be putting them all into the design of this backyard. DH and I are moving back to his hometown of Peebles, OH in about two years, so I have time. I have already started cleaning out the garbage (no brainer there), and today I started my summer spraying for pests and weeds. I love the cardboard idea...hubby does A/C and has loads of this available! We can get free mulch up the road...just gotta rest my muscles for that...worked in front and side yard all day today. See pics in the link below. (And I'm burnt-damn irish skin). I am open to any suggestions of types of plants or designs. I'm also open to any seeds or cuttings...I'll pay postage!!I will be making soft line (squiggly) beds...like I see them do on tv. I think it will be very asthetic and pleasing since it is a very boxed in area. There will be a privacy fence up along the back of the yard, the side where the shed is (will be painted and trellis for vine put up on patio side)...I like the idea for the lattice and then maybe some vine there as well. The privacy fencing on that side is neighbors and they are really nice young family...no worries there. The other side (where bike is) connects to our other property. My son and nephew live there. That is a whole other yard to clean up! We are going to pave in the largest part of the drive on that property with recycled asphalt. Then I'll line with tropicals along the fence. I am putting in my sunflowers where the side beds are now along the fence like in 04. Along with the trops that are there. The crotons are doing wonderful there as well as the arbicolas and broms. We are putting another chain link gate just to the front of the side steps to the back door (really the side but who cares LOL). Then I can hide slightly in the corners of gate with trops. DH won't let me put privacy fence there. I am very excited about this project and I THANK YOU ALL for your generous comments and offers!!! I could go on, but I'll let the pictures do the talking! Hi, sorry I didn't give my location. The broom and I are in Plymouth Massachusetts, so not near Iowa unfortunately. If you do think it is worth it, I suppose I should make some calls around. If someone would think it would be worth propagating, that would be pretty neat.

Like I said earlier you could send the scions directly to me but that depends on many grafts you would like. Unfortunately, bringing in pines across the border either way is about 1 1/2 steps more challenging then other species in the eastern and mid west States due to concerns with pine shoot beetle.

I could would only be able to due a few grafts for you. Then I would have to get a phyto. certificate and mail them to you. There would be a small cost to this.

If this sounds too complicated or you want more plants grafted I can give you, I know 2 fellas "down south" that may be able to help you out.

I will wait for your answer before I proceed.

I think you have inspired me, Darren, to find someone locally. I don't want to deal with cutting scions out myself, but if you know anyone in my vicinity who would be interested, please let me know. I think I will send a couple of emails to nurseries that deal with dwarf conifers around here. Maybe they will know of someone who grafts.

I just thought of someone who may be interested in the broom
his name is Dennis Dodge of Bethlehem Nursery in Connecticut. He's a good guy and a very good propagator. He has a website and you can email him through there.

I know of a couple others but they are farther west and I have to contact them to see they are interested and/or have understock available to do the broom. I will let you know on Monday if this is another possibility.

Hi Lisa, maybe strange idea...,but please, take some scions from the top of witch, I mean 5 to 10 pcs, put it into poly bag, enclose slightly wet paper handkerchieve, zip it, put the bag to the buble envelope and sent it on my adress:
