Is it possible to grow a healthy tree without outdoors?

Is is possible to grow a perfectly healthy Citrus tree indoors without ever seeing the outdoors as long as it gets a lot of sun behind glass in front of big widows?

There have been people here on Gw who have said they never take plants outside, including citrus. Some are afraid of pests will attack their plants, some think taking them out is too stressful..
Then there are people who live in appartments and don't have access to the outdoors.
Anyone here who keep citrus indoors year round? Toni

I kept my calamondin indoor for over 2 years. It was healthy but never bloomed so we never had fruit until we brought it out. Now, the size is 5 times bigger and the fruits are plenty, plenty... Kim

Possible fire blight on trunk- remove growing tree?

Some trees are more resistance than others. I have had it in my orchard on a number of trees, yet other trees were not affected. At times I have had fire blight so bad I could see the bacterial ooze dripping off the blossoms. But, as mentioned no infection on other trees. If I felt like I needed to do something, my first action would be to do just what you suggested. I have thought about trying to remove the canker tissue, but never have tried it. Canker blight that overwinter can cause water sprouts to become systemically infected by the fire blight bacteria if its on a nearby overwintering canker. If I cann't remove the whole branch because the canker is on the trunk, I just leave it alone. However, I do spray the trees with Kocide (copper) along wih my dormant oil spray and maybe it helps, but I am not sure it does much for the fire blight. There is a lot of information on fire blight and all of it does not agree. Studies have been done where it has not helped even to cut out the first strikes, just leave it alone until you do your dormant pruning and then cut out the dead branches. I used to put a lot of time and energy into fire blight, but now I take a more casual approach to it. I have had a lot worst looking trees than yours and one time ordered a new tree to take the place of the fire blighted one, just to pick a couple box of apples off of it this summer. I sprayed painted all the strikes with red paint, then pruned out all the branches during my late winter purning. The tree looked like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree, but is now doing well. Go ahead and try what you suggested. Unless you completely girdle the trunk, it should not harm the tree too much. Use it as a learning experience. See what works and what does not work. I have had some trees die from fire blight, replaced them and they again died. Now, I avoid that particular variety.

If you planted lemon seeds the resulting plants are lemons. They will not be true to variety but they will always be lemons- nothing "non-lemon" about them. Don't try and judge a plant by the appearance of the sprout- it's way too soon to tell. Of course it is always possible that a weed seed got in there, especially if they are outdoors. Birds deposit all sorts of seeds everywhere.

Depending on provenance (area from which the genetic material of the plant originated) some (but not all, varieties) of F carica can be grown indoors under lights all winter. That said, it's not likely that a tree that does well or is from genetic material that does well in your zone will tolerate a lack of a chill period and/or the indoor stay. Just growing the plant under lights may not be enough, and certainly, humidity should be a consideration. Plants that are grown in marginal conditions may be tolerating continual decline and showing a net loss in energy reserves during the duration of exposure to the conditions. A steady decline over winter can leave the plant weakened and with little in the way of energy reserves to fight off disease and insects. Forward thinking, advance now - further along in the growth cycle, should leave us with the general feeling that an indoor stay was not nature's intent, and that nature has honed the survival mechanisms of your tree over eons through natural selection. Short answer: You can probably make it work to varying degrees depending on the tree itself and your abilities to provide cultural conditions the tree would prefer, but your tree will assuredly show a greater gain in biomass (showing that it would be stronger and grow better) if you allowed it a period of dormancy followed by quiescence (more quiet/cool rest) until danger of frost is past and you can put the tree outdoors come spring. Come Tuesday, it will be three weeks since it was transplanted into the DWC and put under the LED. Since then, it has added two full leaves and another one is starting to unwrap today. I've never tried a Dwarf Cavendish before but this plant could have 40 leaves and not be over 4' tall - there is practically no space between the nodes. That is probably due to a combo of the LED and using flowering/fruiting nuits rather than one meant to aid vegetative growth (not as much nitrogen). Mike

I'm just starting with citrus, so I can't really answer your question just yet. But I can tell you that I haven't lost a single leaf since I got it (which is good for any plant grown solely indoors), and it started growing like gangbusters as soon as I potted it up out of it's nursery pot. It was just a single long trunk with leaves, now the top is sporting three separate branches all leafed out. Not bad for a couple months growth - it's rivaling my ficus for the rate of new leaves in that time. I'll try to get a picture to post later today. Mine won't be going outside at all.

Mine is in full southern exposure - a huge glass window, in a room that has large windows on every outside wall. So the entire room is pretty bright. It's been cloudy more often than not the past few months, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it will do with bright, long, sunny days when summer finally decides to come on. I do turn the pot every week or two.

Whether it will remain healthy or not is to be seen, but it's sure off to a good running start! :-)

Yes, Mike it's possible. Years ago, I had a calamondin orange tree that only lived indoors. It had eastern exposure and was always in bloom and always had fruit on it. It looked so pretty. I never did eat any of the fruit since I was told by the greenhouse that it was inedible and not knowing any better, I believed them. I had that plant for 10 years before I gave it away to move to Europe for a while and I still miss it. Some day I'd like to get another one. It was just so decorative.

Thanks all....The only one I have not put outdoors yet is my Navel Orange acroos the street at my work..It was doing AWSOME all winter. But now it is loosing lots of leaves. I thought maybe what it needed was fresh air, since I always put in doors until this year so far.
I wasn'r sure how it would do just left there, but form the looks of it, I think it could look better now...
