I too have wondered in the past if Jackmanii Superba is better than Jackmanii. After doing a bit of researching, I discovered two different answers. Some claim that Superba really is superior--bigger, better bloom. However, I found an article that claimed that what we call Jackmanii is NOT the original Jackmanii, but something much closer to Superba--maybe even the same thing. In other words, what we call Jackmanii and Jackmanii Superba--as found nowadays in garden centers--may be the same plant. Sorry, that is the best "answer" I could come up with. If anyone wants to experiment by planting both, please do report back to us whether there is any significant difference between the two. Kate

I'm gonna guess it's growing roots and settling into it's new home. Clematis are tempermental like that. They just sit there for a while after you do something like transplanting or pruning. Enjoy your new Jackmanii

How about a black eyed susan vine for the yellow? It's quick growing and you can get some real bright yellow varieties now. And for the purple, for constant color one of the solanum vine varieties. I would say stay away from the trumpet vine, far, far, away! It was described as insidious to me last night! And I couldn't agree more. I lived in Brooklyn NY and at 17 planted a trumpet vine to cover a utility pole in my parents back yard, fast forward 27 years and it has spread as far as 100' from the original planting site and my old neighbors are still cussing me for planting it, nothing has been able to kill it and I feel horrible for giving my old friends this headache! NYC was not made for trumpet vines! Maybe if you plant it in the middle of a field acres, and acres from civilization...LOL, just a thought there.

In many areas Sweet Autumn clematis (C. terniflora) is invasive and seeds around. I don't think it has a long enough time to ripen seeds well in my area, but I've read numerous times of it causing problems where it's warmer, so you might want to consider other plants or at least research if it creates problems in your area. If you aren't familiar with Clematis on the Web here is their search engine so you can put in the height you want, and/or pruning type, month with bloom (though take months of bloom with a grain of salt since weather has a lot to do with this) and see what pops up. (Anything you don't care or don't know leave blank.) Not all those plants will be available commercially in the US, but many will be by mail order from reputable nurseries such as Hummingbird Farm, Joy Creek, Brushwood, to name my three favorites. Sweet Autumn is vigorous enough that I don't think there are any other clematis that won't have issues trying to not be overwhelmed by it. I'd suggest planting a few more plants that all have similar size, and look for plants that have longer bloom time. For instance, Mikelite blooms fairly fully for at least 4 weeks and perhaps longer for me even though it's only been in the ground 2 seasons. Ville de Lyon is another plant with a long bloom period in my garden. Confetti blooms later than any other type 3 plant in my garden, but you can also look at Mrs. Robert Brydon which blooms in August for me. Hopefully, others will have suggestions for longer-blooming or later-blooming plants.
