Hans, Thanks, interesting answer. As the theme of hybridization and seeds, I have a question about variety Santa Cruz. His pedigree I could not figure out. I know that he "one of progeny of the late Fred Mayer work". One parent is certainly a garden hybrid. But the second seems to species, but which one? In Santa Cruz, the flowers are small, but it has a strong aroma. I tried to use his pollen, but seeds did not receive.I assume that he has a triple set of chromosomes, but these varieties, though with difficulty but sometimes the seeds are given. I would like to find out what is known about the origin of Santa Cruz, on the number of chromosomes, and ability to obtain seeds from him.

The fatal words, "self watering pot". Citrus do NOT like to have wet feet. Water from the top. Make sure you're seedling is in very well draining potting mix. You can search for either "511" or "gritty mix" on this forum for suggestions on great well draining mixes you can easily make up yourself. And, you definitely need to fertilize on regular intervals. Most indoor container citrus folks on this forum prefer to use Dya Gro's "Foliage Pro" water soluble fertilizer as it has the correct NPK ratio as well as all the micronutrients citrus need. Are you talking about Miracid (which is also 30-10-10), or another MiracleGro product? I think that Miracid has changed its name, as I recall. This is probably what you have. My only concern about the product is that the typical potting medium is already slightly acid, and citrus doesn't need a pH of below 6. The Miracid might be a bit much, especially if used as your only fertilizer product. If you decide to use this product on your container plants, be SURE to follow the indoor plant directions on the label and not the landscape (in situ) directions for mixing. Indoor ratio is 1 TEASPOON per gallon of water. Do not use it every time you water. I would certainly use it sparingly, too.

I have used Dr Earth brand and CitrusTone brand fertilizers available at my local nurseries before. Don't know if they are the best or not. They are organic. And not cheap. But, I grow less than a dozen trees so I do not use too much of it. I am not sure how many trees you are growing - because, if it is a lot, there is an organic growing forum on gardenweb, where some one would be able to tell you how to formulate organic citrus fertilizer cheaply by combining ingredients easily available.
