How to plant clematis through shrubs

yodio

I've gone through half a dozen clematis books trying to figure this out. The (east-facing) front of our house is planted with yews, euonymous and a 7-ft holly tree, all mature. To me it's a bit dull and I'd love to interplant them with clematis for some color in the summer. However, HOW does one do this?

I just don't understand where one puts the plant and how it finds sun until it reaches the top? I apologize if this is a dumb question. I'm very new to gardening and feel I'm littering this forum. Just have the clematis bug and am trying to feel things out. Oh and a 1-gal Polish Spirit that I'm trying to do something with. Thanks!
