growing clematis through a tree

I'd like to grow a clematis through a cherry tree. The tree blooms very early and then is boring the rest of the season. The area receives dappled morning shade, afternoon full shade. Assuming I could find a clematis that will flower under these conditions, I'm curious how I would train the vine up the trunk of the tree and how I would prune it. I'd love to hear from someone who does something similar.
