It is a common fungal infection, Janice. Too much water (from rain, sprinklers, water hoses), constantly humid weather or watering too much can cause that. Being so late into the growing season, I would hesitate to recommend spraying though. When the leaves & blooms fall in the Fall, throw them in the trash. Do the same with any plant debris under the plant as well. On a plant with a fungal infection, they can harbor fungal spores so do not add them to a compost pile or use them as mulch (although it is ok to mulch them if the plant has no fungal infections though). By the way, I noticed on the picture that the leaves look wet. If that is because you are watering by hand, I suggest that you water the soil instead of the leaves. Luis

I've seen this happen on roses close to Multiflora in their breeding, Especially in spring I'll see large leaves , then a cold spell happens and the leaves get much smaller. I've seen similar leaf variations in summer, when I lived in Houston and we had a month with day time highs over 100, the roses that put on new leaves put on much smaller leaves. I thanked them for continuing to put on any leaves at all. Wait for fall optimum growing conditions before you start to worry.

Since there are no real holes in the leaves to be seen, it's a bit hard to consider that damage being caused by chewing insects :-) It looks more like rust but that is not a common issue with laurels. It almost looks like it has a raised texture to it.....have you tried rubbing it off? Is it dry and papery? Can you provide a good, focused pic of just the leaf damage?

As the blooms age, they start adding greenish tones. After several weeks of this, you get another change where the blooms develop pink/red/purple splotches like that. Finally, the blooms start to brown out. Some varieties produce a lot of this and others less. Try to water the soil and never the leaves so you do not get leaf spots. Use soaker hoses or drip irrigation. If using a sprinkler, make the station water close to sunrise so the leaves do not stay wet for long periods of time.Infected leaves should be discarded in the trash when they fall down. Spent blooms and all plant debris from plants with leaf spots (a fungal infection) should also be discarded asap to minimize repeats of this problem at the end of the growing season.
