Seed Pod dropped

I'd brought two of my plants that had seed pods inside to allow them to ripen. The pod on my Creamsickle had started to get soft and dropped as soon as I touched it. The seeds are immature and white but they appear to be full sized and are firm so I have a tiny sliver of hope that they might be viable. Ruth Ann said that there's a small chance of germination if I got them planted right away so that's what I did. I have a tray with about 30 seeds planted sitting on a seed mat and my fingers are crossed. If I don't have any seeds sprout within 10 days I'll toss them. I hope my other pod holds on.

Sorry to here the pod dropped .. what else do your have started there.. Some of your crosses???

karyn1, the next time this happens one should gently open a few shells and see if there is anything in there. Sometimes Mother Nature will surprise us. Keeping my toes crossed for ya on the other one. Congrats on that cross.

Karyn, I am sorry too. I am sure some will sprout. I had a seed pod which was immature. It had probably 20 seeds in it. They were all white and tiny and the cork was wight too. I planted them any way. I did not dry them up, I did not know you have to do this. Quite a few sprouted and now they have a few true leaves. They grow slow but they do. I want to see what comes out of them. Good luck with yours. Pat

So, what is the update Lois? Niger might take 2 years to sprout, not sure. I finally had several seedlings around one plant last fall and I moved them around. Have yet to see how many made it. But, once your plant starts producing viable seed, you should get plenty of babies. If you missed getting seeds in 2010, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they are popping up now around the parent plants. And those dark hellebore? My experience has been that less than 10% of their progeny will be dark too....I just got 30 seeds of dark doubles from Tasmania with an 80% true to parent rating. They are in the fridge for a few weeks.

If you have the space, you might want to consider quaking aspen. The heart shaped leaves shimmer with even the slightest breeze, which I love about them. They color up yellow in autumn and have white bark, so you have seasonal interest really most of the year. We never had disease trouble with ours, but sadly needed to remove them. You see, they have a dark side... these are grove trees and put out significant root systems and suckers, so shouldn't be planted in small, suburban back yards like mine (we had to pull out 13 trees from out backyard- installed by previous homeowner- as the roots were invading the irrigation system). Our western exposure catches a fair amount of wind and we never had branches break. There were a few branches that we cut after they drooped and weakened significantly with that ice storm we had 3 years ago. (for the record, I'd droop too, if I had to weather that bizarre weather condition for as many days!) Other than that, no pruning at all. With a pasture sized area, this tree might be a great option for you, though other readers of this thread may weigh in otherwise. Aspens do grow tall enough to provide shade until the foliage drops, but here in the NW the weak winter sun is a gift, and you won't miss the leaves. If we had a large enough plot of land, I would definitely include this tree again. Until then, I am happy discovering smaller trees more suitable to my small back yard. Good luck in your research! The green/brown growth that you referred to is called the stigma, aka female reproductive part. Generally the ovary will turn brown when pollination took. From the first few pics, it appears there are seedpods forming but it is too early to tell as they can abort. You can celebrate when they grow about an inch or 2 in length. Karyn, I hope you get some germination...I was whacking at a Maya a few weeks ago and realized that I'd just cut off a nice big seed pod. I let it sit for about a week then opened it and they looked exactly like you're describing yours. I did a sort of "winter-sowing" method with them except that they're inside the greenhouse. Nothing happening yet, but I'll probably leave them until spring just in case. I don't hybridize but since it was from Maya...well...Let us know what happens with yours!

Karyn, I am so sorry ! I know you were really wanting that pod to mature. There is always next year. By the way, the Maya you sent me has roots !! I do sooooo love you. I have wanted that brug for so long. Now, keep your fingers crossed that I can keep it till summer. Edna

I read as long as you plant them soon you may have good viability.

They're planted and I'm waiting to see if any germinate. Since I already have one tray planted I might as well start a few more, shouldn't I? lol

Hi Karyn: Did the Creamsickle pod germinate for you? Brighten up these wintery days and let us know how some of your crosses are doing. BTW is there a time limit to waiting for Brug and Datura seeds to germinate? I'm still waiting for the first sign of life. But then it's only been a few days !!! lol Hard to keep from looking at them every few hours! Gloria

Those seeds never germinated. They were just too immature. I did find a pod on a Butterfly that should ripen without a problem. I soak and peel brug seeds and they usually sprout in about 2 weeks but I've had some pop up in a week and others took 6 weeks. I would say that 2-3 weeks is average for brug seeds. I think that datura seeds have a much more erratic germination rate. I've had seeds sprout 6 months after I've planted them.
