Laugh with me before I cry...

Every day this week I have watched my 2nd year Diamantina and Jospehine slowly open. They are both planted in pots with pretty pot trellises side by side. This evening I went out to check if they have opened any further and I found them GONE. My mother in law (who has early stage dimentia) thought they were weeds and pulled them out--flowers and all!!!!

I found them in a plastic bag. They were out of the sun but its hot here. They were out of the soil for a few hours. I soaked what was left of their root balls in water and replanted them. I also trimmed down the vine. Does anyone think they can be saved?

Oh, no! So sorry about your clematis! You must be devastated.
In spite of it all, I think the chances of survival are pretty good. You didn't mention what zone you are in, so it's hard to know exactly how hot it was, but the fact that the plants were in a plastic bag is promising. Dry roots are more dangerous than high temps, plastic would keep some moisture in and prevent the roots from completely drying out, at least for a while. You did all the right things, now keep your plants watered and your fingers crossed. I'll be sending good wishes your way! Let us know how it goes.

First, I LOVED Jeanne, and had to look for her other videos, too. Thanks for posting the link, imsoconfused! "He liked it so much he'd come to me every morning before work and say, Do you need me to go to the store tonight?!?!....I LIKE grocery shopping!" (panting in anticipation of all the treats and goodies he'd be able to buy without anyone there to stop him). " Flyingflower, you must be married to my dh's twin. :-) We have six varieties of popcorn now, enough tortilla chips to feed a platoon, and more salsa than we'll eat in a year. The only thing scarier than dh shopping at the grocery store is dh shopping at Costco. There he buys, on every visit, a three year supply of maple syrup, a giant steak seasoning bottle that will last through several hundred ribeyes, and huge bags of trail mix (at least the latter is kept at his office.) When we go together, he pouts when I shoot down his suggestions about buying the 5 lb. packages of salmon or tuna. If our kids still lived at home, we might actually use it, but with just the two of us there's no way unless we're throwing a dinner party.

Pardon me while I crash this thread to vent. Today's main vent is tangentially related to kitchens: we designed an eat-in kitchen in our remodel, so our formal dining room is now a guest room, and the workman I'm venting about is doing finish carpentry in that area. He's taking two days to do what should be about a four-hour job, he's been over two hours late each day, and he's pushing me to pay the balance of the job in cash due to some income restriction/tax dodge that's, frankly, not my business OR my problem. I was mildly sympathetic to his plea, but when he emailed at 9.50am for our 10am appointment to say he'd be here at 11am IF he could find parking; then emailed at noon to whine about not being able to find a spot.....let's just say my sympathy dried right up. Today's minor vent: we've been at substantial completion on our kitchen-plus job since December 2014, GC has done about half the punchlist and the longer he waits to do the rest (and get paid his retainer), the more problems crop up: a tile might be lifting off the bathroom floor, a kitchen cabinet door is hanging improperly, we suspect the bathroom vent is not quite doing its job because there's a musty smell that takes a while to build up but is definitely there. Will this danged job EVER end???????

I met with two realtors. They both said the same thing. The tiles are nice but it is a design they would not have used. But to leave the backsplash the way it is. That the house is stunning and well done. The house does has a nice view that most houses in the area do not have. It has windows looking out to the country club entrance which has two very large waterfalls. You can see the waterfalls from the great room, kitchen and dining room. The other view is looking out to the courtyard with the pool, this is a much more common view in our area, but also a nice view. The house is in an area where houses seldom come up for sale. Because of these reasons they said do not change the backsplash. Thank you for your comments.

I think you did everything right and I hope they'll be OK. They're pretty tough, in my experience. Please let us know later whether they make it.

Wow. That really puts things in perspective. Sorry that happened and for why it happened. They will come back. I overwintered one and admittedly could have done a better job of planting. Thought it was a goner and yanked it. Days later I realized that the root was alive and kicking. Back into the ground it went, properly. Growing plants require patience. Just like loving people:-)

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm releaved to know they should be ok (even if they will be set back a couple years now). I know that my mother in law meant well. It's painful to watch someone you love slowly deteriorate. Much more painful than any plant. Regardless though i figured that if anyone could understand my disappointment it would be the clematis enthusiasts here. I was taking pics to post here. They were about half way open when they died. I'll try again next year if I get any more flowers :) Thank again. Ill update later when they make progress.

Sorry for the interruption of your clematis growth and bloom. While we understand the sadness and frustration of your MIL's illness we all also understand that you can grieve for your plants as well. Probably a helpful way to let out some of the tension and emotion that may be overwhelming you.
