Next step for brug babies

Some on my brug babies had pretty well filled up their sphagnum moss cups with roots so I took the next step this morning and potted them up with soil! Now I have to keep them safe from my 18 month old granddaughter over Thanksgiving! They are in a south facing full view door in my den. Can't wait for that corner to look like a jungle!

Congrats on the roots!
I suggest you put them up out of her reach, or move them to another room where you can close the door for the time she will be there. She's too young to know not to touch, and at that age, you know how everything is still going into the mouth. not good.
2 more suggestions..Now that they are in pots with soil, I would cover the soil with sand, to keep away the dreaded fungus gnats. The babies will eat at the roots and could kill your cuttings. I learned the fungus gnat lesson last year..ugh!
And the last thing is about the leaves. I know you want it to look like a jungle..but you really should keep those leaves trimmed. You don't want a buffet for buggies like spider mites. I learned that lesson last year too, lol. No leaves = no food for the pesties.
Someone just posted asking about that exact question.
When spring comes, those babies will be poppin out leaves left and right.

Should I take all the leaves off? They are coming out right and left. I will get sand on the next trip to WallyWorld. Thanks for the help!

Hi Graficaamy, I've been gardening and starting plants from seed for over 20 years, but this is my 2nd year winter-sowing and now I grow 10 times more from seed than ever before. If you have limited space indoors, can't or don't want to pay for lights, electricity, etc., winter-sowing outdoors is a great and inexpensive way to start seeds! Especially for temperate perennials that require cold stratification, because Nature will provide the perfect cold wet treatment when you put the containers/pots/flats outside in the winter. I would plant your seedlings outside as soon as possible. Seedlings grown indoors generally need to be hardened off, and you may have to wait until after frost for tender plants, but the sooner they get in the ground, the more they will grow and establish, and the greater chance that some will bloom in the first season. You must make sure they are consistently watered, and sometimes, slugs and other critters will find your small seedlings very tasty (Sluggo or Escargo are safe slug baits that work well). Last year I ended up planting a lot of the perennials (especially the vines) in small nursery pots, as I didn't have garden beds or trellises ready for them! There are still about 25 or so small pots that overwintered in the pot ghetto. So you don't HAVE to get them in the ground the first year, but it usually results in the best headstart on growth. You can grow almost anything using the winter-sowing technique, a hoop house or cold frame outdoors, or even flats in a sunny spot. You can also get lots of seeds for next to no $$ by browsing the Seed Exchange forum, where seed traders often offer extra seeds for the cost of postage.

Yeah, me too Kylie - looking forward to the blooms! Are MEMs leaves serrarated or smooth edged? I love the leaves on Jinny Lind, I hear the smell is exceptional. Brenda, Your's are way bigger though, I think the chicken dung is working better than my worm dung...lol. And I don't have so many to take care of! But I did count over 40 last night, as long as they were over a foot, they were counted. I can't imagine spraying under every leaf in that field of angels of yours. I do squirt a little on the crown of new leaves if any evidence of bad guys are around. I only use Neem oil mix, earwig poison and a spider mite product for above ground problems. I'm too cheap for money and time to get extravagant...but it's still got to work. Productive and efficient. I know neem does not work with all bugs, but around here it's not an issue, it works on most of our bugs, if you do it right. Too little is no good, too much and you'll burn the leaves where the oil is. 1 tbs per litre and a drop of mild soap. I did squish any colorado beetles that I saw, they're not too bright and easily found, had to check for eggs to and neem sprayed them. Lucy darling, my oh my ! Some hybridizers are very picky and others not so picky. On BGI for instance, some of the seeds in the seed bank come with stipulations and some not. JT Sessions donates seeds free and clear, he wants nothing to do with them after he sends them in. You can do with them what you want. He doesn't have the time, and doesn't want to be bothered with them once they leave his hands. If you get a really nice brug from his seeds, he wants no credit, you can do with it what you want. You can register it or not, your choice. All of the other donors @ the bank want hybridizer's rights. This means you give them credit. The hybridizer has the right to deny the ability for you to register the brug if they feel it's not up to their standards. In other words, they don't want their name on a plant that isn't worthy of registration. Once you get a nice plant from a seed, you give the hybridizer one to grow and the two of you can evaluate it's potential. You can, and should let different people in different climates grow it also. This comes under the heading of trialing a plant. While you are trialing you shouldn't share the plant. You are growing it purely to evaluate. I also would think if you grew a nice plant from a seed, but not worthy of registration, it would be perfectly fine to share the plant. If you had any doubts you could check with the hybridizer. I also think (this is my opinion) that you keep the name of the cross, and not use NOID. This way you keep up with what the cross is for further use. Also I think once a hybridizer sells those seeds, you are given the green light to do as you wish with the seedlings. Clear as mud ?? ~Edna~

I leave the teeny tiny ones coming out the tip/s. Otherwise everything else is removed. When the tips grow a little more, those babies get to be on the side of the stem, that's when I pull them off. The less leaves the better while inside.

Daniella~That is some really good info you shared,my brug babies from Mike & Sue are doing really well and I am having to remove all the leaves.The leaves are coming out everywhere.LOL And I just keep plucking....

So this leave removal is only for the brugs that come inside the house, or is it also for the brugs that go to an unheated greenhouse? For you see I have some cuttings and they started to put leaves on. I have them in containers with potting soil. I received 2 cuttings of variegated brugs and the part that I left sticking out dried out so I cut off that part thinking that it was dead but right under the dried part they are green! so I guess they are just kind of slow to put out leaves comparing to the green brugs. should I let the variegated brugs keep their leaves?they all outside. We have not gotten any freezing temperatures out here, but it might be too early for us to get any cooold temps!
