Just when you grow out as many brug seeds as Edna and end up with a farm...you do it for one purpose only...HOPING that out of all those seeds...there will be THE special one.

Lucy, what are you so worried about? You got oodles of space to grow anything. So why worry about what you will have to destroy or not?? Grow everything, and whatever pops up that you don't like, THEN you can always destroy.
You got the time, you got the space, you got the patience. Just wait and see what happens.

Lucy.....there was a thread on another forum about this. Basically, they said that if you bought the seeds..the resulting plants are yours to do what you want with(share, sell, register, etc..), you own them since you paid for them, and the hybridizer gives up their rights to them. Even hybridizers like Liz and Gary said this.

If you get the seeds from a seed bank, contest, or if someone gives them to you....then the hybridizer's rights are retained, and you should not share, sell, or register the plant without their permission.

That being said....I would not feel comfortable registering a plant without the hybridizer's permission, even if I paid for the seeds.

I was also wondering the same thing as you though...is it ok to share it if you don't tell anyone what the cross is, or who the hybridizer is?

Ingrid it is on what is the right thing to do with the seedlings you grew a hyberdizers so generously is sharing with you. Have only bought my FIRST seeds and all others have been given to me.

It is not the destroying part...I DO NOT WANT TO DESTROY a brug. If it is ok with the breeder that I pass it on as a NOID to anybody who would love to get their collection going.

Some hyberdizers give up all their rights when they give you your seeds. But SHOULD I get a very special one...I would like to give credit, where credit is due.

For a newbie maybe harder to understand. Let me see if I find the link that explains it a bit better.

to be registered ! On the other had you could always
gift it as a noid I suppose! Just remember beauty is

I saw the other post and you explained it about the other hybridizers perfectly.

My thought just is that if I have like a hundred seedlings...99 % look the same...WHY would I keep em all after the trail period? Why destroy them if I can make someone else happy with a NOID.

SO I get the seed part, I pretty sure, is there any cross pollination and then growing the seed and seeing what comes up? OH I really like that you never can be sure lol and a purple burg wow that would be so kool. SO what is a trial period and how long is one? I have a concept in my head growing but I canÂt seem to put it on a page lol.

I am a newbie too but I guess a trail period would be until the seedling would have the first flush. You have to see the flowers to decide which one you want to keep. Am I right?

Pat it takes more flushes to be sure that you get to see the final shape, color etc from a brug seedling.

It takes about 3 years before a hybridizer should register a new brug. Very long process and all for the buyers advantage.

So I do take growing seeds out from others very serious.

When I started I did not even make labels. Bought them on e bay and had NO IDEA about anything lol

I don't see why a noid couldn't be given as a noid with no further information.

It probably can...but I would not do it out of the same reason I am keeping a diary from the seedlings I am growing out from seeds that I know the origin from.

Got up sent the kids to school went back to bed lolololol. But now that I have read it I get a better handle on how you need to make room for your new burgs. I would find it a good home.

Well if you were in touch with the hybridizer, I suppose you could ok it with them. I just can't see killing a perfectly good plant that might not be the next best plant to have. I'm sure each hybridizer has an opinion.

It really is not hard to get in touch with the hybridizer from the seeds I have. They are all members of this forum or others lol That is how I came about the seeds in the first place. Most of em.

Even Monika Gottschalk is easy to get a hold of and I know when my Pink Charm flushed last year...she loved to see the pictures :-)

In puppy breeding, I think the owner of the male dog gets to pick a puppy from the new litter (or something like that. - Ask Mike!) It's all stipulated in advance.

I'm growing a lot of seeds that I have purchased and some that have been given to me. If I ever get nice but ordinary brugs I will clear it with the hybridizer and then find them a home. With no information given beyond what I've learned from growing it out. Subject to change, of course. lol

I know all the seeds I have gotten are from members of this forum.

I know that this hybridizer or that one is giving up their rights to the seeds when they sell or give them away. But then there are those who don't. Yet again there are those friends who shared their seeds and I just want to know if I can give the seedling away if I can not use it anymore...with the NAME OF THE CROSS seedling.

Lucy darling, my oh my ! Some hybridizers are very picky and others not so picky. On BGI for instance, some of the seeds in the seed bank come with stipulations and some not. JT Sessions donates seeds free and clear, he wants nothing to do with them after he sends them in. You can do with them what you want. He doesn't have the time, and doesn't want to be bothered with them once they leave his hands. If you get a really nice brug from his seeds, he wants no credit, you can do with it what you want. You can register it or not, your choice.

All of the other donors @ the bank want hybridizer's rights. This means you give them credit. The hybridizer has the right to deny the ability for you to register the brug if they feel it's not up to their standards. In other words, they don't want their name on a plant that isn't worthy of registration. Once you get a nice plant from a seed, you give the hybridizer one to grow and the two of you can evaluate it's potential. You can, and should let different people in different climates grow it also. This comes under the heading of trialing a plant. While you are trialing you shouldn't share the plant. You are growing it purely to evaluate.

I also would think if you grew a nice plant from a seed, but not worthy of registration, it would be perfectly fine to share the plant. If you had any doubts you could check with the hybridizer. I also think (this is my opinion) that you keep the name of the cross, and not use NOID. This way you keep up with what the cross is for further use.

Also I think once a hybridizer sells those seeds, you are given the green light to do as you wish with the seedlings.

I really never ever plan on hyberdizing to register brugs...but should I really grow out a very special seedling like Edna did...and it passes all the requirements for registration a new brug, I would of course do that.

You can register them on BGI's Brugmansia's Cultivar registration. You must have grown it for 2 years, and were able to propagate it, and it retain it's original state. It should be unique, and not look like ones already registered. Also you need 5 different pictures of the flower/plant. You can see the registration if you go to BGI's home page, left hand side and look @ Register a cultivar... there is more, but this is the major part.
