any gardens to see around Myrtle Beach?

DH and I are going to the beach for the first time over Thanksgiving and will be looking for things to see on a tight budget, not to mention still looking for an affordable place to stay. Any suggestions? We plan to bring our fishing poles, too. Travelocity.com hasnt helped us yet on accomodations. Any garden tours? See anything on my list you want?

Brookgreen Gardens. Also Litchfield is not cheap to stay, but has reasonable Getaway Pkg that includes dinner and tickets to Brookgreen. Spectacular.

I have spent many times in Myrtle at this time of year....during conferences. You should be able to find beach FRONT hotel accomodations dirt cheap right now, as it is the off off off season.

Other than Brookgreen, I can't think of any gardens in the Myrtle Beach area. If you were going to Charleston, that would be quite a different story.

Be sure you do your homework on the hotels. Try to find a website with reviews....there are some reeeeaaaalllly seedy places!

The very closest ones I can think of are: Earl Miller Japanese Gardens, Long Beach South Coast Botanical Garden, Palos Verdes Penninsula Sherman Gardens, Corona del Mar, a short hop from Roger's Gardens, also Corona del Mar (a commercial garden center, but very much worth a visit) Rancho Los Alamitos, a historical site with gardens in Long Beach, Mission San Juan Capistrano, Here is a link that might be useful: Earl Miller Gardens in Long Beach

Oh thank you! That sounds easy to find and not too far away. I do have a list of other plants I am casually looking for too but if I don't find them this year there's always next year. Pinky Winky hydrangea ( I like saying the name) Hot lips salvia - I did buy one of Monrovia's heatwave series- Scorch- today which is very pretty although I went looking for hot lips. You would think I could find this locally given how popular it is but not yet. Indigo Spires and not Mystic Spires which is all over the place. Zebrina Hollyhock. I don't see any seedlings coming up this year.

Quirkpod, I live about an hour away, in Kure Beach, NC (just south of Wilmington). I know there are members here from that area and there are gardening groups. What they are though, I don't know. Hope someone responds. If they don't, I would contact some of the nurseries in that area. They would know of groups. Barb

I live in the Myrtle Beach area (Little River) and I just wanted to say Ditto to the CHEAP rates. You can stay ocean front for the same or cheaper than you would pay for a Days Inn on the Interstate this time of year.

Check out Brookgreen for sure, but there isn't much else in the way of Public Gardens.

I think Boone Hall Plantation is near Georgetown but I can't remember where it is exactly. I was there once it was OK.

I don't know the going rates, but Ocean Isle, NC, just up the road from MB has condos pretty reasonably this time of year on the beach. Also, it's not a long drive to Wilmington, which has some nice gardens, or to Southport, very charming town.

Thanks, all. We've booked a 3-night stay at Litchfield Resort, which includes tickets to the Brookgreen Gardens and breakfast. So it turns out that we will be staying first class and paying middle class rates for what we get. This could not have worked out better. See you there!

Thea611: you emailed me privately but your charter.net account does not recognize you. I cannot reply, but this will do. We had the best time just south of M.B. at the Litchfield Resort. THeir breakfast buffet was the best in the world! However, I would not recommend it for dinner due to poor atmosphere and food. I can send you the link to all of the gorgeous photos we took in and around Pawley's Island and Brookgreen Gardens. I hope you email me again to discuss. Next time, we'd probably stay at another hotel, but havent decided. Get in touch.
